| Hi everyone, I am relatively new to poker. I started playing the free and penny tables online about a month ago. I have read several books (most of David Sklansky, some of Doyle Brunsons and Phil Hellmuth), and have understood the basics of them all (though I know I have a LOT to learn.) So I finally opened an account for $100 and started playing the $.50/$100 at Party Poker about a week ago. I am reading hands pretty well...and am able to predict what people have pretty accurately and pretty consistently. I play pretty tight, but bet my hands aggressively if I think I have the best hand or know I have good odds to make the best hand. And I get out when I don't make the hand (or stay in to see if my read on my opponent is correct...and it often is.) My question is for those of you who play at Party Poker. I am in no way a conspiracy theorist, but it seems that my luck has been way below normal at this site. I have kept track of my first 500 hands, and I have yet to get a pocket pair above 8's, and only 5 times have I got "Group 2" (in Sklansky's groupings: AK unsuited, TT, AQ, AJs, KQs). And going into the turn and river with the best hand...I have been outdrawn on average of 9 out of 10 times (even when betting aggressively through the flop), while only drawing to the best hand (even with good odds to draw it) twice. And though I have stayed basically even...I continue to lose money regularly...and have yet to have a winning session. (I normally play about 2 to 4 hours per night.) So my question is this: is this run of terrible cards normal? or should I be evaluating my playing? And if so...are there any resources out there to help me do that? What kind of things in my play should I be looking at? I would appreciate any help. --greg | ||

| Experience - there is no book or advice that can provide that. You are doing the right thing playing low limit games to gain that experience. A couple things to keep in mind. 1. 500 hands is a pimple on a pigs ass - don't draw any conclusions from such a small sampling. 2. Most low limit players will call you down - so getting sucked out on the river is going to happen. 3. Keep playing patiently and wait for cards worth playing - if you miss the flop don't be affraid to fold. 4. Winning at low limit is simple - start with very good cards - only, raise when you hit flops and muck when you miss. Do the above and you will win - there is no doubt or luck involved in the long run. | ||

| I am also a newbie poker player and I play at partypoker.com. I have observed the same thing you have. Most players in .50/1 and 1/2 will sit on trash and then outdraw me on the river. The advice of being patient any only playing good hands is a great idea. Also raising pre-flop rarely phases players at low limit holdem on partypoker.com, it's just too cheap for them to see the flop (what's a buck or two?). I've been talking to a guy a work off and on for the last few weeks and he has suggested that when you play tables with higher limits such as 2/4 and 3/6 you will wind up with fewer callers and a better chance at winning provided you know what you are doing. The other thing he taught me is to set loss limits for yourself (max amount of money you are willing to loose in a given night). Once you have hit that limit, stop playing or move to a different table. Do this especially if you find lots of players at your table only playing top 10 hands (playing really tight). Another thought, is avoid overbetting on two pair and trips. With two pair it is extremely easy to loose to a higher two pair, trips, or worse yet a full house. I have had to learn this lesson the hard way....:( The last thing I would do is avoid excessive raising even if you think you have the best hand. Maybe raise on the turn to see if other callers fold, call or reraise. Avoid multiple raises on the river...you'll usually drown by it.... | ||

| EUSTACE87, I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT. YOU HAVE READ TLL THOSE GREAT BOOKS, AND HAVE PLAYED A WHOLE MONTH AND NO PAIR ABOVE 8'S. IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO PACK IT IN AS YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT WITH SUCH CARDS. MAYBE IF YOU PLAY FOR 12 MONTHS YOU'LL GET A PAIR OF ACE'S. LJH | ||
