Ring vs. tourney NLHE, Aisthesis, 13. Dec 2003 23:41

Looking at my results in various online NLHE venues, I find good net results in SNG's (9 and 18 player) and at the $25 ring tables, but still have trouble at the $50 tables. Actually, my best winnings in general are the tourneys.
What does this most likely mean about my play? And what should I most likely do to work on my weaknesses?
One conclusion might be just to play tourneys and forget about the ring games altogether, although I feel like that's kind of a cop-out.
I will say that in both cases, I feel like I play quite well the vast majority of hands, but make some glaring errors both in the tourneys and in the ring games (sometimes it's not backing away from a decent but losing hand in time, sometimes getting involved in a stupid bluff, sometimes it's folding the wrong hand). I also feel like I am better at playing shorthanded or heads-up than I am at a full table.
Any ideas or suggestions in light of this self-analysis?

Play tighter in a full ring game. A lot of the plays in Super System are for playing players that actually fold once in a while. You are probably doing better in tourneys because the limited bankroll makes a lot of people afraid to put their money in without the nuts.

I have the same problem sometimes gearing down from tourney play to ring games. Especially at the $50 buy-in, people will call more, so you need to pull back your fangs a bit.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense--and is quite consistent with another rather shocking statistic of mine: My biggest positional loser is currently the button!! And I know exactly why. It's because for a long time I had the (obviously bad) habit of always betting from the button if I was in the hand and it was checked to me. So, since observing this ridiculous fact about a week ago, I've basically stopped doing it (maybe once in a while if I'm essentially certain the flop has missed everyone else or something like that). Anyhow, since the cutoff is my biggest positional winner, I've been trying to play the button pretty much the way I had been playing the cutoff.
