Hypothetical hand, iceman5, 13. Dec 2003 16:16

You are the BB with 8-3. There are 4 limpers and you get a free play. The flop comes 822 rainbow. What do you do?
Choose one please.
A) Bet. Everybody limped showing no real strength. Protect your hand.
B) Check. You will get overcard callers anyway. If more than one person calls, one of them will probably hit one of their overcards and you are dead meat. One of the limpers may have limped with 89s, 87s or 99 anyway.

I'd bet pretty much every time on that flop. For one thing, as BB, quite aside from someone possibly having A8s or something, you're also the one most likely to have the 2. You can't wait for the absolute nuts to start betting, and more than likely you're ahead in the hand. I think checking would be a horrible play here actually.

I would check, hoping to checkraise a LP player. There is no way that someone with two overcards will fold to your bet since they are getting 5-1 if no one else calls your bet which is pretty close. And, you have no kicker at all. This is the type of situation where it is best to try and checkraise and if it gets checked around and the overcard comes, then you have saved $$.

I agree with Shorn. A check raise is the appropriate play here. You protect your hand while actually representing trips. A bet from in front there looks weak to me if I'm on the button.

Another advantage of checking is that you can wait to see how play develops. It's unlikely, but if you check and it's bet, raised, and re-raised, you can easily fold, confident that you're facing an overpair or trips (or both).

This was actually a hand from "Middle Limit Holdem". The author says to bet in this situation and I disagreed which is why I posted it to get other peoples opinions. I disagreed with a lot of the hands when I read the book. The funny thing is that I am currently reredaing it and I have agreed with a great many more this time. This one I still disagree with though. I definatley wouldnt bet, but I hadnt considered a check raise which seems like a good idea now that shorn explained his thinking.

As BB they can't put you on anything. I would represent the 2 and take a really long time on the flop and then put in a bet that is actually double the required amout. They will remind you, that it is too much and have you take back half, but this will scare others off. With 8-3 and a flop like 8-2-2, you wnat to win the hand right then. With 4 limpers you do not want to give anyone a turn card with their over cards, someone will catch.
