More Thoughts about Binions and Vegas, FeliciaLee, 13. Dec 2003 12:31 | ||

| Sunday, November 30, 2003 I had some more thoughts about the games at Binions. The 10/20 at Binions was interesting. It was during the day. Lots of seniors and semi-professional locals (read: they think they are semi-pro, but have to work a real job in order to finance their poker). They were pretty predictable. They seemed to be the types who had played for years and years, the same table, the same game, the same opponents. Even moreso than the no-limit game, if that is possible. I found some glaring errors in their play. I would not hesitate to guess that none of them had ever read a poker book in his life. I am NO pro myself, as countless critics have easily found holes in my play. So for me to find a billion holes in the play of others means that they were pretty bad. They were also crafty, having learned the hard way. I wasn't going to make much money off of them, put it that way. They may not maximize their wins, they may not bet for value properly, but they sure weren't giving their money away either. I can never understand grumpy locals. For instance, I came in on the tail end of this cowbow roper who was in town for a convention or rodeo. Super-fish, I will call him. I heard the others say he was stuck for over 1k, having played all day (after he had left). Anyway, in one hand, he made a string raise. It was kind of iffy, since he was trying to "say" and "do" at the same time, but a little off the mark. At any rate, the dealer said that he was okay, the raise could stand. One of the locals, with a monster hand, tried to help the raise stand, as well, since he wanted to re-raise, lol. But a couple of the crusties insisted it was a string raise, and call the floor, and grumble, grumble, grumble. It was a string raise, really, I know that, everyone knew that. But shut the heck up. This guy had given over $900 to the table. Shut UP! The locals realized their mistake in opening their mouths when the cowboy got beet red and started apologizing, very embarrassed that he had been made to look like a fool. Even though they decided to let the raise stand, the grumpies had made him look stupid. When the grumpies realized the fish was about to swim away, they started backtracking and apologizing. It didn't work, the cowboy managed to go all-in during that hand for his last $100 (I believe he had Axs or something). He lost in two places and left the table. Everyone groaned. I kept my BIG mouth shut, like a good girl, hoping everyone else would, too. But they didn't. Grumpy, grumpy fish haters! ---------------------------------------------------------- Glenn and I planned to play in the Sahara NLHE tourney. I told him how I'd busted out on the bubble (7th) on Wednesday. We went to a Cuban restaurant that we'd visited years before. Back before we were married! Maybe seven, eight years earlier. It is called the Florida Room. OMG, such excellent food! The tourney was pretty good. I had a nice table. Everyone was getting along. The playing wasn't great, but wasn't extremely terrible either. I did well and had about 5000 chips after the break (1500 for buying in, 1500 for the optional add-on, and 2000 that I'd won, mostly with steals, before the flop). Glenn was out right after the break, going in with pocket tens vs. pocket aces. Doh! I didn't get many opportunities to play in the third hour. The blinds started doubling and I was getting nothing. I went all-in a couple of times and stayed above water, but by the time there were two tables left, I was down to my last 1500 chips. I finally found a "decent" hand to make a stand, KQo, and went all-in, in middle position, after it having been passed to me. A late position player found 88, and called. He went for the overkill with a flopped full house, but was too nervous to show his cards, lol. The dealer almost had to force him. I was wondering why he was so embarrassed, but maybe this was his first tourney (he'd just been moved to our table). IGHN. Oh, well. The players in Vegas are better than the players in Laughlin, by far. Even the tourists are better than the tourists in Laughlin. I will be so glad to go home tomorrow! I told Glenn about Korean food. I'd had it while looking for houses in Arizona, and loved it. I spotted the GenSing Korean restaurant on the strip, and we decided to go there after busting out of the Sahara tourney. OMG, it was awesome. Fantastic! Those dudes really know how to cook! We will be headed home tomorrow, thank God. I just don't "do" Vegas very well. I lost money, never really won a thing. I didn't lose a lot, maybe $600 altogether (between the tourneys and the cash games), but I just didn't feel in my element, nor did I like the Vegas crowd (mostly locals). I am so happy to have met some people I've wanted to meet for a long time (Mason, Roy Cooke, "MajorKong"), but Vegas just isn't happening for me. Felicia :) | ||

| A string raise is when you put in less than what the required amount should be to make the raise into the pot, and then you go to reach back to your stack to add the correct amount. (it's not allowed). However, if you say "Raise" first, you can put the required amount for that raise in separate motions. If you don't say "Raise", than the whole amount has to come out all in one foward motion. 4P- | ||
