Once you've moved on from play money to real money tables, how can you be sure that one of the players at your table isn't actually a house computer program with either a sophisticated algorithm that plays perfectly every hand or a cyber player with full knowledge of all the cards dealt each hand.

I mean, these sites are in business to make money...who's regulating and overseeing this stuff?

There isnt a computer program that can outplay a human mind in poker. As far as people on cellphones colluding well use your own judgement on that one.

Interesting...there are computers that can outplay humans at chess, and chess is a much more difficult game.

Yes but chess is a much different game too. In chess, the computer can see what the player has, in poker it can't. In poker you adapt to the play, the opponents, the bets, and everything else that is processed my human brains. In chess, it's pretty straight foward. Yeah, different players will play differently, but not the same as in poker.

Although it may be true that in a fair game a computer program can't beat a human opponent, the underlying assumption here is that the site is not running a fair game. It would be extremely easy to write a program that would beat any player in the world if the program knew what cards were coming and what the other players were holding.

I thought the same thing that a computer couldnt take out a solid player...till a guy on a site I was playing at sent me a link for PokiPoker. Basically some college professor in Canada set up a computer that you can play Hold Em against. The longer you play the more it plays against your style. Play against him heads up an hour and tell me if you feel the same way. More times than not it kicks your a**. Give it a shot. As for the site....just do a google search for PokiPoker.

It is odd that no one has mentioned Mike Caro's program - Orac. It could beat many a human player. It shouldn't be too hard for low limits to write such a program.

Paradise and PokerStars have good reputations for actively policing their games. Personally I'm not worried about bots in my games, though I am certain there are bots playing online that can beat me, without colluding. I just try to pick a table I can win at. It's unlikely you will find a bot at a No Limit or a non-holdem game, I think. In any case, bots are lower on my list of concerns than colluding *%**%*#&%^. As long as I am consistently playing well and making cash though, I'll keep an eye out for the fishy stuff but try not to dwell on it. Good luck at the tables.

You can't. If you believe that you are being cheated don't play. If you think the games are straight up and you are having fun then do. Use your own judgment.
