Falling short in Multi's, DeadRabbits, 12. Dec 2003 14:51

I have been doing fairly well in the PP multi tourneys, mostly 20 and 30 dollar buyins. However, I am constantly finishing close to the money or barely in the money, and ALWAYS have a very short stack in later rounds. I am usually right around the average when we close in on placing in the $, and can't seem to build my chips to a promising level. My play is pretty tight, only playing usually groups 1-3 hands pre flop, and utilize slowplaying when I have the nuts. But, I seem to always fall short, and hardly ever (once) made it to the final table for a good payout. I rarely make attempts to steal blinds, and hardly ever bluff, which I think may be some key points to missing out on some good finishes. Any good pointers or advice to take the next step and get some good paydays on these things would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks:)

Once the BB is 800+ you must make plays to take the blinds. If you are in late position and everyone folds in front of you, this is when you need to make some plays. If the BB is 1k thats 1500 in chips you can pick up which is huge. If you make a raise 3X the BB then you would break even if for every three you steal, 1 time you are raised and must fold. However, the 1 time you are raised you may have a great hand and this could further build your stack. Obviously best case scenario is if the people to your left are short stacks so that even if they do go all in you are not risking much. When it gets to the money at PP a lot of players tighten up as they try to move up in the money. This is the best time to open up as you can skip some ahead of you and give urself a chance at making the final table. Playing to tight will kill you with the big blinds. If you wait around to get a hand like aa or kk you may not even get action when you hit it. Hope that helps.

Marbles,

Great advice, and I appreciate your thoughts and feedback. Your message sounds right on the money. So many times I have thought to myself I should be making more stabs at these huge blinds, but because I am shortstacked, I cringe at the thought of being re-raised and put in my place. I guess those are the chances you must take to push your stack upwards.

I will incorporate this advice on my next multi, and will let you know how I make out. My play as of late has improved greatly after reading theory, super system NL portion, and glancing over these boards and the great advice they give. I just ordered tournament poker for advanced players too to to check out. Guess I can't get enough.

Once again, thanks for your input.

Josh

I like marbles advice, just make sure that right after you get into the money you don't try to steal/bluff to many SS blinds because they will now be willing to push in the stack and watch the results. I think medium sized stacks are your biggest targets, and as i've learned the hard way, don't try to bluff/steal a leader, especially if he got the lead by playing loose, and if you got a legit hand make the raise big enough that hes really gotta pay to see his cards.

Good point-- If you are looking for good poker books on nl multis you should definitely pick up "Championship No-limit and pot-limit hold'em" by T.J Cloutier. It is short and concise but gives great advice and probably touches on a lot of things you have thought to yourself while playing. It is my favorite of all the poker books. Good luck.
