So I don't play NL live cash games very much, mostly tournaments. Betting strategy in tournaments of course is a totally different beast. In the live games though, I have a few "what would you do" questions:

$100 buy in, 2/3 blinds at the Bike. I have AA in the BB. CO opens for $15, which is a fairly typical raise to open a pot. He's a solid player, but since he's opening the pot that doesn't mean he has a killer hand. Folds to me, I reraise to $30. He calls.

Flop comes down J83, rainbow. I bet out $30 (1/2 the pot). He goes all in (about $100). I think and think and I call, which was a mistake but I won anyway, but that's not the point of the post. So my question on this one- are my pre-flop and flop bets/calls a good amount given what I want to accomplish?

I'll post another hand in the next post.

I would reraise more, overbet the pot a little bit and hope for a call or reraise, if I win the pot right there, thats OK. I'm not really trying to trap, even with AA, because I am out of position for all rounds. If I get called, I'll probably go all in on the flop unless it comes down really bad like 9TJ all suited to a suit which I don't have. If he reraises pre-flop, hallelujah, go all-in, and he is somewhat commited to call you when you have the best hand in poker.

This might not be an error depending on your read of the player. A tricky aggressive player might try to push you off the hand with a worse hand. What do you know about this player, does he only make big bets with the nuts, or is he a maniac who will bet marginal holdings as if they were the nuts?

I think your mistake here was not raising heavier PF. I'd of put it to 45 to really make him pay to see that flop, triple his bet and make him reevaulate his hand. However, could you explain to me why your flop call was no good, did he only move in with gold or something?

Flop call was correct I suppose, but he had 88 for a set. I called thinking that if he had a set he wouldn't try and fold me, so I put him on something like QQ, KK or AJ. I knew he wouldn't have 33, so there were only two hands I had to be afraid of, and with JJ I figured there was very little chance he wouldn't slowplay. So while the call was likely correct, it turned out to be a mistake. Until I spiked an A on the turn, that is.
