Tight is Right/For Starting Players, Roy Cooke, 12. Dec 2003 10:12

The "conventional wisdom" is that playing limit hold'em tight aggressive is the best strategy....As a general rule that is correct....There are situations where a different strategy is better, but those situations are for advanced players to analyze and determine. Beginning players should not alter their strategy much.

Aggression can be defined in many ways......Beginning players should DEFINITELY bet their hands if they think it may be the best hand. But in low limit games bluffing or betting hands that are big favorites to be no good is not good value. That is because in those games players do NOT fold as much as in higher limit games....therefor the value of having an opponent fold a better hand is not available.

So if you are a beginning player playing low limit...Play tight...But bet your good hands....Don't splash around with junk.....But DO bet your hands for value!

Life is Good :-)

I would like to add that you might want to be a little more willing to play nutty type drawing hands a bit more liberally . Although this will increase your variance ( variance is goot :) you are very likely to get payed off in 1 or more places if / when you hit your hand.

Just dont go overbaord with your draws . conversly try not to pay off opponents drawing hands when they get there.

I completely agree, and think you've hit the nail on the head as to why a lot of higher limit players have trouble gearing down for a lower limit game (I know I do). A mid to high limit player will try to win short-handed pots with some pretty marginal stuff, as well they should in games where people are capable of folding, but what happens is that if there is even one calling station in the pot, all bluffing pretty much goes out the window.

Don't be the outlaw at a table full of Sheriff's!

Anyway, examples of the times where aggression can win you pots in higher limits are when you sense weakness in your opponent (almost regardless of your hand and the board, if you opponent is weak you should bet) and when the pot is short handed with a somewhat ragged board. Another time is when you were the aggressor pre-flop, it often puts you in a position to win after the flop. However, as you mention, these situations don't come up much in low limit, and "low" is all relative to how the players play and not necessarily the bet limits. I play in a 15/30 in CA which often plays looser than the 3/6 online at UB, depending on who shows up that day.

You have in hand the PFA tables for Texas Hold'em, and these put "convential wisdom" on a quantitative foundation. The PFA table based on Warren's starting hand set is for tight play for beginners and is designed to keep them from getting into trouble. Stanonick's starting hand set is for "No fold'em Holdem. The PFA for Warren's starting hand set is 14.6% and that
for Stanonik's more liberal set is 18.3%, which is 25% bigger than the former value. Thus, on average in limit Hold'em games, you will fold 81.7 to 85.4% of your hands pre=flop.

If you see the flop more than ca. 18%, you are starting to play too loose and are putting your bankroll at risk.

I have devised that a scale to classify players based upon the percentage of flops they see. It is as follows: 19-35%, loose; 36-52%, very loose; 53-69%, reckless; 70-85%, maniac; 86-100%, insane.
