| Hi everyone, I'm relatively new here and don't really have and people I can talk to about poker other than on a superficial level. But I do have many questions and here is one. I live in a small city in Western Canada and play in a local B+M tournament whenever my wife lets me out of the house. There are about 30 people who enter the tourney and it is pretty low stakes. $30 buy in no re-buys. There are about 10-15 local regulars who are quite strong players and they are a lot of fun to play with, always laughing and joking around. The tourney play gives the players the option of first seating at the 3/6 and 10/20 games later in the day. My question is what would be considered a good finish. I usually finish out of the money but almost always make it down to the final table. So I usually finish 6-10th place. Always a bridesmaid lol. I am trying to improve my game and feel like I am playing more consistently than when I started, and am generally feeling better about my B+M play. Don't ask about the online play. Are my final table appearances a respectable finish? Is this a good judge of my play, or should I start getting into more of the 3/6 games after to judge my play. I know I am fairly new to the game as I only have about 60-70 hours in, about equal onlnine and B+M. I am not looking to make money at this. I just want to have fun, be a good (not professional) player, and hopefully win some extra cash to boot. Should I be looking at higher in the money finishes before going to the 3/6 game. Any thoughts or questions would be warmly welcome in this cold climate. | ||

| Hi Ryan, Comparing tournament play to ring game play is like comparing apples to oranges. Some of the concepts still apply (for example, they can both be "VERY SWEET!" ;) but the strategic (& other) differences between the two are vast. The most important factors in winning ring game play are patience, discipline, knowledge of odds, table selection, seat selection (among others). Tournament play, on the other hand, has a much greater focus on psychology, understanding your opponent, having the heart to make strong bluffs, knowing how to play varying stack sizes, being able to "switch gears" as the blind levels & other situational factors change, etc. I'd actually suggest that you start out focusing more on ring games than tournaments, because learning odds, starting hand selection, patience, discipline, etc. are really fundamental to all forms of poker. Lee Jones' book "Winning Low-Limit Hold'em" is a great book to pick up. Helped me out a lot when I started playing low limits in the casino. Good luck! on 12. | you need to be aware that tournament play and live money play are two different animals! while poker is poker, some of the skills which stand one in good stead in one game are not so valuable in the other, and vice-versa. it sounds like you are playing conservatively in the trnmts so you often get close to the money, but just can't get over the hurdle. i, too, have this problem, and have been encouraged to "open up a little" late in the trnmt. after all, with the ever-escalating blinds, you simply can not sit and wait for pocket aces, kings, or AK. you have to steal the blinds, semi-bluff, etc. above all, be aware of your stack size in relation to others. (i.e., attack the small stacks, be wary of the big ones.) good luck kennycatkiller | ||

| IF YOU KEEP FINISHING CLOSE TO THE MONEY, I WOULD SUGGEST BEING MORE AGGRESSIVE, AND TRY TO BUILD CHIPS. IF YOU BUST OUT...YOU GO DOWN SWINGING | ||
