| Don't insult others on-line playing, it just makes the person doing the insulting look stupid! I am sitting here laughing to myself as I play because 2 people on my table have been fighting back and forth for about an hour about how bad the other player is and how they play crap. The funny thing is they are both playing close to 50% of the flops and calling everyone to the river (especially each other) Then there are 2 others and myself that are just sitting back and making money off of both of them since they are obviously playing way, way to many hands and have put each other on tilt to top it all off. | ||

| I think that there is something to being in your own home that makes players think it is OK to insult other players. Which of course is not true. also im eligible to get my chat at pokerstars back 2/28/04 lol | ||

| I agree. The other day I was playing at Poker Stars, in a relatively short game of $30-60 Omaha. There was pretty much only one real live fish in the game. He was so bad the game was still worth playing in. He played every hand that he was dealt and yes, he managed to win a few of them, but so what, I thought! Sit there quietly, hope he stays, play your best game, and let the chips fall where they may. But unfortunately, two of the other good players (and now I question myself for even coming to that conclusion) started to comment on how bad this player was because their "Egos" were crushed that they lost some chips to this guy. Why on earth would a good player EVER say something that may cause to chase the live one away? Good player?perhaps. Someone who really understands what their main objective is? Never. While the objective for me is to sit in games based on how well I think I will fare over my opponents at hand, sometimes (unfortunately) other players lose sight of how important that really is. If you have an edge....try to hold onto it. It means absolutely Zero if you are a good player but you fail to see what's potentially...right in front of you. It *adds* to the bigger picture. ...So, the live one leaves the game shortly thereafter.... 4P- | ||

| The playing style of most players precludes them from making money, thus one is left to conclude that they are playing for other reasons. Ego being one. The onlt question is how to exploit this ego driven player. Most won't be cut out of for this and many will disagree but alot of money can me made by verbally attacking those players and more importantly their playing ability. They will be unable to control their emotions, which they previously demostrated by chasing off Mr. Calling station, and try to "prove" that they can play. Like I said most will disagree but against the right opponent it works perfectly. -May the bridges I burn light my way -Blade | ||

| I actually try taking the opposite approach to that. Instead of verbally attacking the two players that were ridiculing the live one, I'll try to make the live one feel "welcomed" in the game. I can use what they have said to my advantage by not actually having to say anything to them at all! Now I suppose you could use the approach that you spoke of, and perhaps that would work - I have found that what works for me a good percentage of the time, is to try and counter-act what was said, by throwing some compliments to the live one. Like, "Good for you, nice hand." Or if he wins when I'm against him I may say, "Well played, you got me." (something along those lines). Something positive to try and reassure his bad poker playing. And sometimes, by throwing a few compliments to the bad player, will also throw a signal to the "good player"... to SHUT UP!! 4P- | ||

| My approach was meant for the players who were bad mouthing only and only after the calling station has left. My reasoning is that you want to use an opponents weakness against them. These players have the weakness of letting ego and emotion get in the way of their play. Which is why they chased off the calling station in the first place. With the calling station I take the exact opposite approach as you mentioned. I try to be their "friend" and compliment their wins and emphathize with their loses. Again the calling stations weakness is wanting to play and be accepted. Socialization works best. Basically I do whatever necessary to releave them of their money. -May the bridges I burn light my way -Blade | ||

| Oh No! You mean all those compliments I get on my play from people at the table mean I'm a fish? I'm crushed...LOL.... I know what you mean - I like to have a nice calling station at the table, and if I get spiked once in a while, I no longer worry about it. The same for an ego-mainiac. I used to be intimidated by the maniacs at the table - you know, the ones who take glee in dancing all over you - and then I decided to quit that and play back with faith in my hands. The turning point was a SNG where this fellow on my left was sure to raise PFand flop every hand. At first I did a lot of folding, as did the rest of the table, and he built up quite a good pot. You could almost sense his wicked glee at running over the table. Then I got impatient - and played back and called this guy to river taking down a few good pots from him. The rest of table caught on and played back as well. I had the pleasure of busting him out completely on a monster hand. I busted out a little later, not making it into the money (4th) - but, you know, my true pot was spanking this guy for his bad behavior..... http://www.kebzweb.com | ||

| No need to verbally attack them. I let my playing do the talking. At first I'll start out solid with them chasing to the river. After showing I'm solid after a while, then I start stealing pots from them, showing a bluff or two if the ego player didn't pick me off. Then the tilting player will be guaranteed to play every pot. As long as I have a monster, there's not too much to worry about. In fact, I'd sooner want a egomaniac than a calling station at my table. The calling station doesn't know any better than to call, whereas mr. ego is more than willing to get into raising wars, juicing the pot far more then the CS ever could. | ||
