Betting the nuts at the river (NL), iceman5, 9. Dec 2003 17:53

Im sure this is one of those "it depends" situations but here goes anyway. In NL holdem when you have the nuts at the river, is it better to make a decent size bet but not too big to scare your opponent off, or is it better to go all in and hope he has a hand good enough to call therefore giving you a big score? If the pot was $8 at the river, I used to bet maybe $3 or $4 and would usually get the call. Lately, Ive been going all in when it appears the opponent has a good hand but I have the nuts or probable nuts. I dont have any specific hands to post but for example, I hit the nut flush at the river and believe the opponent has 2 pair or a set. Another example, I have 2 pair with 2 of a suit on the board. The river gives me a boat and completes the flush draw.

Yeah, I'd definitely say both strategies have their place. The things I usually try to think about are: 1) Have I been caught on a bluff recently? (if so, that speaks for going all-in), 2) How hidden are my holdings? (since the nut-flush is usually fairly obvious, there I'd generally just try to sell my hand), 3) How pot-committed is my opponent? 4) Does my opponent like to call too often?
That's about all I can think of at the moment.
