NL hand, iceman5, 9. Dec 2003 17:35

I was playing $25 max buy in NL today (blinds .10/.25). I was UTG with K9s. There were very few raises preflop on this table so I limped in. A mistake I know. I rarely play this hand from any position. There were 2 other limpers plus the blinds so the flop was 5way. The flop came K2K. The SB bet the minimum .25 into the 1.25 pot. The BB folded and I raised $2. The other limpers folded and the SB raised all in (he had $8.50 left). I had to call $6.50 into the pot of $14 so I was getting about 2-1. He obviously has a king but in the SB his kicker could be anything including a 2 for a full house. I figured there were 5 bad kickers he could have. An ace, queen, jack, ten or two. And there were 7 kickers I could beat (one would tie). So I called. The turn was an 8. The river paired the 2. Unfortunatley for me, I had his kicker beat, but it was an 8 and he had a higher boat. Was this a correct call?

Hmmmm... I don't have a problem limping UTG with K9s at a passive NL table. But I do have a problem with your big raise on the flop. I just don't think that's really a flop you want to go all-in with because the only caller you're going to get is also going to have a K, and your 9 is just too vulnerable. I think my strategy on the hand would have been more along the lines of staying in as long as it was fairly cheap. Even with the best hand (as you had on the flop), I don't think it's really worth the risk there because your hand has absolutely no deception value. The only exception I might make is if the bettor was a known bluffer and you considered it less than a 50-50 chance he had the K.
If there was a flush draw on the flop, I'd consider raising a little (maybe to .75), but your big bet to me seems to be striving for an all-in in a case where I would consider it just too risky.
I'm sure the experts here will disagree, but I really think it's a hand where you'd like to win a small pot but can live with throwing away the best hand if things get too out of control (unless of course a 9 shows up somewhere). I also feel like throwing away some possibly good but marginal hands in NL sets you up in the long-run for getting people to bet aggressively into hands where you really do want an all-in.

I know you know, but I'm going to point it out again to emphasize. You played K9s from early position in a no limit game and got about as good a flop as you could ask for, and still didn't know what to do.

On the flop... you might do well to just call his bet. If he's bluffing, he's not going to call his raise. If he has a worse kicker, let him keep betting it himself. If he has a better kicker, you'd prefer to lose the minimum. There aren't many hands that run a reasonable risk of outdrawing you here if you do have the best hand on the flop.

Hmmm... actually, it wouldn't really be the flop I'd be looking for. The flush draw or flush is the key hand here for aggressive play.
But even that does have some problems without the A. In "tight mode," I would agree with you as to throwing it away pre-flop. But even in tight mode, I'd be inclined to keep AXs in EP.
Do you think that even at (full) tables which you want to play looser, KXs is still just untenable in EP? Admittedly, anything short of a 2 pair flop, is quite tricky to play, and even the flush or flush draw can get complicated with the A still out there somewhere...
