"6. People who think you should alternate the use of he and she in poker columns. I believe if a poker reader really wanted this concession to political correctness gone mad, he would have let me know."

I agree, switching back and forth is a bit much. However, here's your assignment: The next article that you write, use female pronouns in the entire thing (even if they were male players).

Is there anybody who actually thinks that???? I'm about as far to the left as they come and I don't think you should alternate gender for your pronouns. I also don't use the spelling "womyn." There are a lot of far out wackos on both sides, but I think people are blowing this "political correctness" phobia way out of proportion. It's like people on the far right think you should refer to anyone pro-choice as a "baby killer", that doesn't mean that the mainstream republicans think that.

I'm a university student at UofA and it warms my heart when my teachers give us assignments that are all female gender articled. also, if one is in the humanities one must pretty well write he/she or just she otherwise risk losing marks for gender bias. Oh yeah, gotta love it when the pendulum swings the other way further than it should...grrr....

I didn't say alternate and I didn't say "womyn" either. but language does send a message and consideration for who might be reading it isn't out of line or PC, IMO

It's mankind not people-kind or woman-kind. It's been that way for centuries. It's time to get used to it. It is ridiculous to have to right he/she or alternate it. When writing something and you are talking about people in general, writing 'she' just sounds goofy and is an obvious attempt at political correctness and making a political statement. When you aren't writing about politics, this just sounds stupid and takes away from the point you are trying to make. If you just use 'he', the only people that notice are those that have their curlies in a tight knot.

I'm all for equality and equal pay and equal rights. Hell, I'm even for women paying spousal support and for men to get more custody rights. Women can hold doors open for men too and ask them on dates and bring them presents.

We don't need to change the English language and it's usage to have equal rights.

If you don't like it, get back in the kitchen! Okay, I'm just kidding about that last part but really, changing the English language is a stupid way to try and get equal rights. It really accomplishes nothing except for taking away from the point that you are trying to make in whatever it is you are writing about.

Okay, flame away!

you're right, b*tch, the use of the English language doesn't mean a thing.

i hope you take my point without taking the language to heart

okay, that was a bit harsh, even to me.

What's your point, that cursing people out is the same as considering language's effects on perceptions?

sorry, my 2 year old woke me at 5 am- maybe I was grouchy.

i think my point is the same as yours- what we write and read has more effect than people think and it should be considered.

That is my point too. Everytime I read something filled with he/she or alternating he/she or all she, I automatically start thinking, "oh boy another person overly concerned with political correctness"

It seems like it just distracts me from what they are trying to say. Now instead of focusing on the content of their writing, I am thinking about political correctness.

So, slavery and suffrage for women should have been left along because it had always been that way?

"ridiculous"? maybe extreme- but the thought and consideration behind it might be worth considering.. but as i replied above, I never said alternate it either.

Really? And why exactly does it sound "goofy"- because it's always been done that way? So we should just continue with nurses being female and doctors being male? Secretaries and CEOs?

So, no chance that language can build in assumptions or affect mind-sets? Poker isn't a game that men play that women just happened to be allowed to join in with now?

I think you don't understand the many ways, the FUNDAMENTAL ways, that language is used and what messages it sends.
