I get a lot of private e-mails and/or public responses from people who assume that I "think" I play perfectly, or never make a mistake. This always makes me LOL, because nothing could be further from the truth.

I am not, nor will I ever be a perfect player. It is impossible. I can be the very best I can be, right now, but I cannot be better than that until my game improves, at which time I can only be "that" good.

Sometimes the posts on 2+2 get so out of hand. They are written by people who think there is only one way to play poker. They assert it is exactly like Blackjack. You play a certain hand, a certain way, in a certain position, under every circumstance. You never, ever vary your play or "mix it up."

At first I thought these people were just out of their minds. Then I started doing a little research and found out that most of them are playing online only, and are under 21. They certainly sounded immature, but they are also playing a kind of "basic strategy" that one can play online, not live.

These kids are always full of "aged wisdom," telling other posters how they "misplayed every street," etc. I get a kick out of these posts, and notice that more educated posters rarely bother to correct the kids. It is useless, as the kids come back with some line like, "I know exactly what I am talking about, and I regularly win over 90% of my limit sessions..." Blah, blah, blah. Impossible!

Getting back to my own play...Over the last year I have kept decent records. I am DOWN. I am down in cash games and I am down in tourneys. Yes, I am admitting it, I am DOWN. I am in the red. No, this doesn't bother me.

It doesn't bother me because I am getting better and better, overall, as my records indicate. It doesn't bother me because I can see trends in my records. Periods that sometimes lasted over a month when I was "running bad." It doesn't bother me because I can see how I lost quite a bit of money in a session, by getting outplayed, then went back to the books and found myself playing much better the next few sessions.

For the limits I am playing (4/8 during the week and 10/20 with a half kill on the weekends), I am doing better and better. I can beat these games rather consistantly. I don't feel that I am better than EVERYONE at the table, but I feel that I am better than most of them, and I know who is better than me, have no trouble admitting it, and stay out of their way.

(BTW, I never move up in levels until I can consistantly beat the current level I am playing at. Not just one session or ten, but many dozens of sessions, maybe a hundred or more.)

One of my biggest problems in poker is that I don't really enjoy cash games. I play them, but they don't do much for me. Now that I have been playing tournaments steadily for a year, cash games are like going to football practice everyday, whereas a tourney is like the "big game" on the weekend. I keep waiting for the blinds to increase. I like the pressure, I like playing on a short stack.

I wonder where all of this is leading me.

Felicia :)

I enjoy reading your posts and usually agree with what you say =)

However, I personally enjoy the cash games more than the tournaments. I've only played for 1 1/2 months or so I guess it's because I'm not good enough to play in tournaments yet so I enjoy (trying to) beat the cash low limit games more =) (have not tried on line yet).

There's just so much to learn! Each time I make a mistake I go home at the end of the night to think about what I learn wrong. I realized that 90% of what I would initially consider to be bad beats end up being a mistake on my part at some point (either getting involved with it in the first place, misjudgement here and there, etc).

Reading your posts have been an entertaining source of info. Just out of curiosity, do you post any additional info in your journal or do all the posts get carried over to here? (basically I'm asking is there a need for a very lazy person to sign up for your journal if they keep up with all the UPF posts?) =D

Awww, ty Andy :)

I would say that most people enjoy cash games more than tournaments. I've always been one of those people who was born on the face of the earth, but felt like I was from Mars. I guess I never quite fit in, lol.

As time goes on, you will ponder new things about poker. The basics don't fill your head as much as the psychology behind the game. Then you will really start to go crazy, haha!

Sometimes there is a little more on my journal than I post here. Not much, but just some personal tidbits, or answering some mail. Of late, the journal has become almost a poker forum, with many more people interacting. Sort of like here! I expect it will slow down some after the holidays.

Glenn is in the process of building a website for me. Not an interactive journal, but just a listing of all of my posts. It can be found at:

http://www.frontiernet.net/~bagsmode/Felicia's_Poker_Journal.html

He is slowly loading all of the old posts. If you want to just read them, one by one, without "subscribing" to anything, that is the place to go! The sweetie even put them into date order for me. What a guy!

The poor house.

tourneys are a negative sum game where the juice just about guarantees you will go broke in the long run (except for some very talented individuals or those with deep pocketed VC's backing them ) virtually all of then do.

If you continue to play at a limit till you beat it you will rise to a limit that you can not beat and there you will go broke. That's why I recommend playing a limit below what you think you can beat.

Losing over the course of the year can happen to good players. Some times they don't get enough hours in to make the year a significant time period. Sometimes they endure temporary insanity and continue to play against levels they cant beat.

If your playing for the glory this is fine . If your playing for the money this is a disaster.

You can think of the tournys as the big game and rings as "practice" if you will. But by my way of thinking (money wise) since tourneys are decidedly -ev as are ring games you cant beat. And ring games you can beat are +ev , You have it exactly backward.
