Ouch! That darn AA, GeneM, 9. Dec 2003 10:25

Hello everyone,

Here's my latest bad beat story. I think I played it right and just got unlucky, but I'm open to comments.

Playing 3/6 LHE online. I'm in the BB with AA. UTG raises, and one player in MP calls. All others fold. UTG has not played at all like a maniac, so I figure him to have KK, QQ, or a nice A. MP has a pretty big stack and has been a calling station for a number of hands, so I decide to re-raise, thinking UTG will cap and I might get heads-up with him. UTG caps, but MP calls. Okay, so he has a decent hand too.

Flop comes AQ9 rainbow. Perfect, I flopped a set. I bet, UTG raises, and MP calls. Now I'm thinking UTG has QQ or AQ. Either way I'm ahead big time, so I re-raise, again looking to drive out a drawing hand from MP. UTG caps, MP calls.

Turn is a 5, completing the rainbow. I bet, UTG raises, MP calls. UTG obviously doesn't realize he's drawing dead, but what really worries me is MP. However, I don't see any reason not to play it the same way as I have so far. I re-raise, UTG caps, MP calls.

River is an 8. I bet, UTG folds, and MP raises! Amazing. I make a crying call.

UTG had AQ, and MP had JT for the straight and all that dough.

So, what do you think?

Gene

The reason I asked was other than calling the pre-flop raise with a questionable hand, he had a ton of odds for the open-ended draw after that. I was thinking that many a player will call a raise and even a 3-bet with big suited connectors, like QJs and JTs, figuring that any cards that help the big pairs help them even more if the straight or flush draw flops.

If that's the case, then is it even possible in a limit game to give poor pot odds to a drawing hand? After all, we made him four-bet it every time.

lots of players like J 10, in a low limit game like 3/6 your not going to see a lot of experienced players lay down J 10 without seeing the flop, regardless of it being unsuited. After the flop I am assuming the player considered to be pot commited and was not going to laydown the open ender and that is the correct play. You played it correct as well, making the player pay for the cards.
question for you....
What 2 unsuited starting (hole) cards can you make the highest number of NUT straights with?

player 1 : JT
player 2 : KJ

Board : Q9T83

player 1 doesnt have the nut straight

Or maybe I didn't get what you meant

ScanX, I think what Highflyin meant was, if you held J-10 and made a straight, it would be the nuts if a J or a 10 wasn't on the board, that's why he said, "using both hole cards". In which case, it would always be the nut straight!

Right 4Poker, sorry I didnt clarify, USING BOTH J & 10, (also no J and 10 on the board) you cannot make a non-nut str8. same with any two cards 10 or higher, but J 10 makes the most.

When should he slow down, he has the best possible hand until the river. If you can't bet rolled up Aces without a flush and only straight draws on the board, I don't know what you should be betting.

The river bet might have been a mistake, as the caller likely had a big draw and JT is the only one out there, but other than that he played it the only way he should have.

He had the odds to be drawing to the J10 (not sure about on the flop because even if he hit, the other has the full house chance) but definately by the turn the whole way.

And you played it perfectly because while the J10 might have had the odds to draw... the AQ was dead the entire time and his money was just extra, so at no time should you have slowed down.
