| So I'm playing in my usual small buy-in home game and the following hand comes up: I'm dealt two red 9s in the cutoff. Out of 7 players its 5 limpers to me. I raise and narrow the field down to just me and 3 others. Now, I've got this one friend that thinks he's got this uncanny read on my play. Every time I raise preflop, he immediately puts me on big cards. He always assumes I have AK or AQ. Never does the thought cross his mind that I might be getting aggressive with a medium or even high pocket pair (he is the type of player who lays in the weeds with every premium starting hand, letting others bet for him. It never fails.) Anyway, the flop comes what seems to be completely ragged, 9c 7s 3h. I flopped top set. It gets checked around to me, and I bet out. Everyone folds except my one friend, you know, the guy who thinks he knows exactly what I've got. I know just what was on his mind: he put me on AK and he thinks I'm going for the steal. I think about just calling, but I'm sick of him betting into my preflop raises when rags come on the flop, so I reraise him. Much to my surprise and delight, he reraises me. Since we're heads up, there is no maximum number of raises, so this pissing contest continues until he is all in. The pot is now at about $9 (which is pretty big for my little home game.) I immediately throw up my set, and my friend rolls over 3d4h! He must have been out of his goddamn mind. Anyway, I finally showed him that he can't underestimate holdings anymore, and my raises have been getting the respect they deserve (some more so, but don't tell my buddies that.) Anyway, tell me what you think. Have you ever had a player you know that was so sure he could read your play that he busted himself in one hand with bottom pair? -Big Todd | ||
