What do you think of my play, KQo, mkpoker, 8. Dec 2003 19:52

This was an interesting hand I played tonight at UB 3/6, in which I think ALL my plays were questionable, from pre-flop to fold (now you know how it ends). But at the same time, I think my play was defensible...maybe even correct! I wonder how other UPFers would have played. In any event, it's an interesting hand.

A new player has just entered in MP and posted an out-of-turn blind. The BB is a weak player. Overall, the table is tighter than usual for this limit online. I'm in EP (UTG +1) and receive KQo. In a typical passive online game, I'll sometimes limp with this. In a more normal game (from EP), I'll fold. But because of the extra blind, I raise (a mistake, perhaps?)

This play works well, as only the out-of-turn blind calls. We're heads up, but I'm out of position. Flop comes 355 rainbow. I bet, MP calls. Turn comes 8. I bet again, hoping MP will fold. Instead, he raises.

The pot is laying about 7:1, just about the right odds for an overcard call. But I fold, for a couple of reasons. First, I have no read on MP's hand at all. He could very well have trip 5s and waited for the turn to raise. Second, I'm not likely to collect a lot of extra bets if a K or Q does hit the river. If MP just has a low pair, the K or Q will be a huge scare card for him. And if he does raise me, I can't well re-raise due to the risk of hitting trips.

So what do you think of my play here. Dump the hand pre-flop? Just limp? What about the fold--good play or better to pay one more bet hoping to get lucky?

All thoughts welcome and appreciated (even Adam's, who made a great post about a hand I described last night).

I would do the same. Extra blind money calls for a raise, you have two big cards.

Turn comes 8.

I would usually do the same. I sometimes slow down on the turn with this sort of hand.

Good fold, I think.

I'd have played it the same, start to finish. If I had an ace high though, I probably would have checked the turn and called the river, since I could reasonably win a showdown.

I like all of your play. But, since a pair or an ace is beating you on the turn and you do not know the player a check fold would have saved a big bet. He called you preflop and on the flop, i think you could have saved money by slowing down. Maybe if you knew the player was one to fold once the price goes up you could still bet. I am not really sure, check fold, or bet out on the turn probably have equal value. Unless this player had a small pair in the hole and raised the turn for the free showdown but would have checked behind you if you checked.
