3 months of bad beats!?!, PokerHater, 8. Dec 2003 13:56

No joke I have literally had a 3 month run of bad beats.I play at planet or poker stars and home games and its all been the same for the last 3 months. I get an ace high flush, a dude stayed in with his 57s and gets the straight flush. Shortstacked I go all in with ATs and A3 calls and gets the three. My AQ vs KQ all in loses to the straight. Just a few examples. Last two examples were tourneys and I raised preflop in the first example. What the F is going on? I have had two winning sessions in three months. Tourneys, money games nothing. I lose every 70/30 favorite to a wacky draw after I've bet aggressively. Aarrghh! I must have done something wrong in a past life. Oh well, maybe taking a few months off will help.

I don't think you should base your poor results from the lack of not placing in the tournaments. There's more short term luck involved even if you are playing well. But your tournament play could have some grey areas.

Focus in more on your cash games. Sit back. Reevaluate your game along with your emotional stability - while you're playing and when you are not. If you only booked 2 winning sessions over a course of 3 months and you're playing poker regularly, then something is wrong there and I don't think you should blame it on bad beats. Players will run bad, but often times players want to blame it on something else other than looking right in their own backyard. Take some time off only if you seriously think it will help you, cause the poker gods ain't gonna treat you any nicer than they were treating you before if you have too many leaks in your game and you don't spend the time to reevaluate the situation. Good luck PokerHater.

Ok, so after posting this and reading the one response, I decided to calm down and examine things rationally. I really wasn't kidding about the insane amount of bad beats I've been having but I realized that it was making me too timid in other occassions and I was throwing away winning hands. I decided to play again and not worry about anything. Well, I started with an online tourny which I promptly won. Then I played some cash games. Three sessions and I cleaned up in all of them. Thank you Flakes for making me take a hard look at my game. I'm back and the Poker Gods are smiling again. I'm a PokerHater no more.

You know that happened to me recently too. I had a really long string of bad luck and it kinda messed up my game a bit.

I have a new rule for that, I'm going to take a break whenever I'm running bad for more than a week straight, and that break will last until I can come back feeling optimistic again.
