Bankroll update, Robert M, 8. Dec 2003 13:23

I have decided to post updates on this site about once a week regarding my bankroll and what has transpired during the last week. Feel free to disregard my posts or and feel free to offer advice.

Starting from scratch: I bought in 110 at PP. In the first week I played about 30hrs and made 750. Halfway through my second week I went to 1050 and cashed out 500. Since then I have hit the wall and have suffered some bad beats. I am at 575 right now. So in my last 10hrs of play I have only netted $50. I play a very tight/aggressive style of play. I play NL HE' and 30+3 PLHE SnGs. It seems now that my initial expectaion of 750 per week (39,000 per year) is a bit high end. I am rounding it off to about 300 per week playing approx 20hrs per week. I should expect to earn about 15-16000 in one year. Assumming I am a very good player, with great reads on opponents, and considering the tables that I play, is this an unreasonable expectation?

To determine an APPROXIMATE per-year salary so to speak, you will need to play for a very long time at the same rate for consistent amount of hours. The longer the period of time, the more accurate your long run average will be. It would be impossible to say that over the last 3 weeks I have averaged $300 a week so take 300x52 weeks and get an annual salary approximation. You would need to do this for many months to get even close to what you may expect in one year. Even then, it is still a guess, as nothing is consistent in the poker world. I can go 4 months and win 15k, then go another 4 months and break even.

I guess I should rephrase my question. I will substitue the word expect with "is it possible."

Is it possible to consistently make a profit, IF your game is sound, IF you are constantly playing lesser opponents,.... ok scratch that. How about this:

Playing the same games as I, do you or anybody else out there grind out a respectable annual profit?

Seems common to hit a wall after cashing out there. I have had the same experiences. My best advice: take a break, for about a week, then come back.
