| Hey gang, In my past 3 live multi table NLHE tournaments I've made the final table each time and in the money twice against some really good players.I'm thrilled about this However each time get there I seem to be fairly short stacked and am in constant survival mode. Am I playing something wrong? I have no room to make any moves at all at these final tables, I'm usally all-in or fold to try to double through. Then Its luck, do I catch or not. How can I refine my game so I can get there with some chips to play? I seem to be playing my tourney early and mid stages well but as it gets close to the final table my stack is seeming to dwindle. Maybe I'm playing too tight at bubble time? Any thougths are appreciated John | ||

| Congratulations on your recent string. 3 final tables in a row is great. It may be a bit early to call you chip status situation a "trend," however. If you're ALWAYS short of chips, it's something to work on. But if it's just these three tourneys...that's not a big enough sample to make any general conclusions. That said, coming into the final table short-stacked may be evidence of playing too tight at bubble time. I'm no expert, but all the tourney books say that bubble time is a great time to get aggressive, since everyone else is likely to tighten up. Finally, I think the payout structure should have a big impact on your strategy. If 10 makes a big payout and 11 gets nothing, you want to avoid being the bubble boy at all costs--especially if you're already low-stacked and you think you have relatively little chance of making a top 3 finish. No sense taking big chances on the bubble here. But if 10 only makes a few bucks and the top 5 get paid large, it makes sense to go for it--even if your prudent gambles mean you bust out 11th. | ||

| Most people tighten up during bubble time, if you want to WIN then loosen up when it gets to two short-handed tables, especially when it's been folded to you. I probably sound like a broken record about using aggression to get it heads up with the BB, but it's really true that you have the Blind in a bad situation. You know that squirmy feeling you get when you call a raise in the BB because you don't want to be seen as weak, then you miss the flop and here is the pre-flop raiser betting again, what the heck do I do? If you add to that pressure the fact that this person has position for the next two rounds and it might cost me my entire stack and the tournament to find out if he's just stealing, then you can see the dilemma you've put them in. Especially in tournaments when the blinds get big POSITION + AGGRESSION = WINNING POKER. Ok, broken record over. | ||

| Start stealing those blinds in late positions and put people to decesions for all their chips, its a hard thing to do with mediocre hands but sometimes its the correct play on the bubble when people have to think about going bust. Also at the late stages the gap concept becomes huge, you need a MUUUCH better hand to call with than raise, your calling hands should be premium unless the guy is stealing way to much or is a SS in which case you should shoot back or call an SS all in. | ||
