Tourney hand Question, SeanCandy, 8. Dec 2003 07:33

| Online tourney...Blinds are 400/800 100 ante. I have about 12k in tourney chips. I run into JJ in EP...I make a raise of 3000 hoping to represent AA. I get one caller who has about 28k...flop comes Q92. The calling player makes a quick bet of 600. I sense weakness. I have been watching his play and he has been coming into pots with lots of drawing hands and Axo and the like. I go all in hoping to knock him off of his draw. He calls and sure enough he is holding J10o and hits an 8 on the river sending me to the virtual rail. Is there anyway I could have played this hand better. Also, call me crazy ,but I believe calling my 3k raise with J10o is a poor play as well as calling my all-in bet with a straight draw is also a poor play. Thanks. SC | ||

| Unless this is your first raise, I don't think you can try to represent AA specifically, but regardless your raise should be respected. Regarding an all in because you sense weakness, this is usually a bad play. Your senses only have to be wrong once and your out of the tourney. A raise of about 1800 would probably do just as well to take him off a bluff, and since all he needs is a Q to beat you, why risk your whole tourney on what may be the 2nd best hand... Good times, ReMMy | ||

Sound slike the right size raise, forget about representing AA You don't want too may callers with JJ So you made a good bet. I get one caller who has about 28k. He ahd a big enough stack to call but this hand is a bit dodgy. ..flop comes Q92. Yikes byut OK The calling player makes a quick bet of 600. I sense weakness. I have been watching his play and he has been coming into pots with lots of drawing hands and Axo and the like. Good read. 600 into that pot is weak. > in hoping to knock him off of his draw. In my opinion he made a bad call, it was likely too big of a percentage of his stack to call on a draw. I see people doing this a lot and think its dicey at best. > Is there anyway I could have played this hand better. Sorry it didn't work out for you but you got a bad beat

| Your right sean, calling the PF raise and the all in bet bet with the draw are both bad plays, the PF call being considerably worse. I think a raise of 1800 on the flop is a good play but turn play becomes tricky. I think on the turn you would then have to push your chips in, and maybe with 1 card to come he backs off, but its also dangerous in case he has some garbage like QT. Either way i think if your going to play this hand, and your instinct was right about the draw, raise him on the flop heavy and let him see the turn, then push forcing him to a decesion with only one card to come. Odds are a loose big stack is gonna call anyway and knock you out there but you at least give him another chance to toss the draw. | ||

| Thanks Bond... That is a good point. I think that is the hole I missed. By going all in on the flop, I eliminated the chance he might fold if a blank hit the turn. Thanks again SC | ||
