Well I'm not a tournament player but what I see as being a common link to many of the known and successful tournament players, is that they all have tremendous reading abilities and they have no fear. Scotty Ngyuen, Layne Flack, Men "The Master", Phil Ivey, John Hennigan, "Miami" John, and Phil Hellmuth.....just to name a few. Also, In my opinion, they are all natural talents.

i agree, i am interested in seeing what people have to say. I play alot of tournaments and what i think is that sense, discipline, and patience are huge. after that putting yourself in the position to get lucky (tom mcevoys advice) and playing one hand at a time (scotty nguyen) are what make a winning tournament player.

Well you can *never* go wrong with discipline and patience. Amen to that! I like the way you think :-)

Patience and discipline would be right at the top of the list. Analytical skills and courage are important too.

I think the reading people and no fear are very important skills no question when used on the right people(calling stations a lack of fear has no effect on). However, I think the ability to not tilt after a vicious, vicious, beat would be what I rank as the most important. Far too often have I seen people bleed their chips after that happens(and sometimes be a real gusher). If that is part of what people are referring as the discipline, then I agree with them.

Aggressiveness, you ain't gonna win any tournaments playing passive, poker in general but especially tournaments. But i beleive patience mixed with that aggressiveness is the key, picking your holes in a tournament is far more important than ring because while a underpair vs AK is always a good bet in ring (mathematically speaking) it will eventually bite you in the arse in a tournament.

thank you all for your replys so far, i am always trying to develop my game so these things help me in my quest for improvement. One thing i did forget to include is that you really have to enjoy playing poker and competing. I think in the long run it REALLY helps you take bad beats. A couple of you mentioned that as being important and i agree completely, and have found that if you truly enjoy the competition and realize the idea is to play your best every time you play, than you are really winning the game anyway. Sometimes I am so satisfied with what my game has become through alot of hard work that I feel I could suffer an endless string of bad beats, although that may be pushing it. Thanks again for the replys and I hope more come in. Every little bit helps.

Confidence throughout. Complete Focus. Natural Ability, (well ok, that's not really a skill but alot of the big names certainly exhibit it). Picking Your Spots Carefully. No Fear. No Tilting allowed because it can cause you to lose everything, and there's no reaching into your pockets to pull out mo' money either; which falls under your category of being Disciplined.

I think that you need to remain calm throughout. I know i've blown a few when I took a bad chip hit. I was still in a great position, but because of my loss, i had the false sense that I was in danger of losing and began chasing pots.
