MISTAKES CAN COST YOU MORE, LATER, ADAM THE EXPERT, 8. Dec 2003 02:44
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
ok, I'm trying, I'm REALLY trying this new "tiny letter" thing.

Hope Y'all appreciate it, cause it's really going against my grain!!

I want to talk to you today, about how one mistake, can cost

you a lot more, than what you lost on the hand in question,

especially in tournaments, or to people who

are "parlay" players (not recommended, unless you know what

you're doing)

It's just so important, to make the proper play, each and

everytime, as mistakes can come back to haunt you!!

Now, all my true fans, make sure you're sitting down.

I don't want you to be too shocked . . . . .. . . .

Adam the Expert made a mistake today.

(well, never said i was a perfect player.

While playing a 55 dollar no limit tournament, I had

gotten down to 120 players, out of a field of 700.

My 10,000 stack, had dropped down to 8000, after

pocket 5's and AQ bit the dust.

Now, in second position, I had a KQs. The blinds, were

only, 200-400, so they were'nt as yet a threat to me.

at best, this is a limping in hand, hoping to get callers,

flop something big, and double through.

So, ok, I raised to 1000 and got two callers.

The flop came, J J Q, with two hearts.

Can't give a free card, I bet 1800

One person folded, but the other called.

The turn was a blank, something like a six.

Check.

Did he have the flush draw, or slowplaying the jack?

Adam the Expert's Cat-like instincts said that the slowplay

of a jack, was the likly hand.

but, I have conditioned myself, not to give a free card.

Ok, bet all in

Call

He had the jack.

Now, I'm down to like 2100.

I survive the blinds, getting a walk, so now I'm on the button

with QQ.

a player who just LOVES Ace Kings, opens for 1000.

all fold to Adam the Expert, who decided to call, and see

if an ace or king hits the flop (I nailed him perfect, on his

starting hand.

The flop comes 9 7 4, Adam the Expert bets 1100 all in,

and Mr. Ace King calls.

Adam wins the pot.

Later, feeling frustrated with a short stack. I make a

move in the small blind, with a king nothing hand, and run

into 10 10

BUT, HAD I NEVER PLAYED THE KQs in the first place, or

had saved the chips, when I was fairly certain that I was

beaten, Mr. Ace KIng

BASED ON HIS EARLIER PLAY

would have almost certainly called my all in raise, before

the flop, with the QQ.

Now, Adam the Expert would or course, not been a big

favortie, but still won the hand, and now would lhave had

A very nice size stack, and may well have gone on to win

the eight grand for the event.

Same thing happened last week, when I got sixth place in

the same event, but only because I made a stupid blunder,

done out of anger and frustration.

Next day, I was winning 1600 in 30-60 high low stud,

and normally would have quit for the day, but because I

"only" won 1000 in the tournament the previous night,

I kept on playing 30-60 games, until I had lost all my

profit.!!!!

Horrors, Adam the Expert, NEVER does that.!!!!!!!

So, you see, one mistake, can come back to Haunt YOU,

LATER.

PLEASE, ADAM THE EXPERT FANS, ALWAYS PLAY YOUR

BEST GAME.

AND. . . .. IF YOU'RE NOT IN TOTAL CONTROL OF YOUR

EMOTIONS, PLEASE DON'T EVEN THINK OF TRYING

TO MAKE IT, IN THE POKER WORLD.

YOU WON'T MAKE IT.

now lose the double-spacing thing and I think you'll find that you can do pretty well with your posts online (and make it easier for everyone to take in what you are saying).

And it's good to see you're MORTAL after all, though I doubt any humility will result.. :)

One step at a time, let's wait till he's used to lowercase letters...

Adam,
Great point. This is especially true in tourneys. Losing that first big hand can cause a waterfall of bad effects. One of the biggest things I see happen in a tourney is that after a large stacked player takes a huge hit, they get knocked out of the tourney by getting drawn out on AFTER getting all itheir money n with the best hand. Not having a big stack to back up your winning hands is a crappy way to bust out.

well just posting that he made a mistake is a bit of humility. I like that I can actually read his post, the ALL CAPS thing hurt my eyes too much, so I was skipping a lot of his posts before.

I think some of the referring-to-himself-in-the-third-person schtick is pretty humorous. :)

I was not aware that people from Alaska said Y'all. I thought that was a southern thing. Adam, have you lived in the south or did you pick up the y'all term at some point in your life? Many of my non-southern friends make fun of me for the use of y'all.

Although, I must admit I have seen way more unexpected things come from Adam.

Ok, Adam. I may not know anywhere near what you know. Hell, only God may know more than you(or if you are athiest, no one knows more). Anyway, you had good cards and you bet them out, he called. Flop came, you bet out, which was fine. The fact that he called though should have sounded off an alarm or two in your head, which I think somewhat did. When the turn came, you bet out again just to be called. That should have been a dead giveaway right there.

All right, you lost the hand. Don't especially look back on that hand as the one that completely messed your game up. I've ended up looking back before on hands that broke me. Usually, I would have ended up playing the subsuquent hands the same way. Had you not played that pot, you would have probably made a post about losing pocket queens to the A K guy. I wouldn't worry too much about it, sometimes shit happens and you are the sidewalk. At least you learned something from it.

Hi Adam

I think I must be a sick puppy because I am starting to like you. LOL

I like this thread...the small letters (You're growing!)...The content is very good too and it shows some (I emphasize some, not a lot :-) humility (Not your strongest trait :-).

That said, I am feeling the same way....Played poorly this weekend, not at all my best effort......That needs to change within myself ( And will)....It is common and easy at your age to believe that what is, always will be. But that is not the case, things change, you change, the demands of life and poker change as you get older and your abilities decrease.

I do STRONGLY (Notice the caps :-) agree with you that mistakes cost you more later. I wrote a column years ago called "The Compounding Effect" in which I stated that both the good and bad things you do tend to compound upon themsleves in both life and poker.

Anyway, I liked the story :-)...Been there......done that! LOL.

Life is Good :-)

Hey Adam-

Good story, and very poignent. Last tourney I played, I busted out four away from the money when I tried to make a move with KQ.

The situation was a little different, and the consequences more immediate, but it was a critical error, especially as the attempt was completely unneccessary.

I was fairly short-stacked, with T6000, and the blinds at T500/T1000, when I got KQ under the gun. The blinds would likely go up next hand or the hand after, but I could have gotten at least once more around the table and waited out the money.

The thing is, I didn't just want to make the money, I wanted to win. Everyone was playing fairly tight, waiting for someone else to bust out. I thought an all-in bet from this posistion would buy me these blinds. Unfortunately, the button had me well covered with big slick in his hands. He took the gamble, and an Ace came on the flop. Game over.
