Worst hand i've ever been involved with, Bond18, 7. Dec 2003 21:41

playing a 100 SNG at party NL, im normally a 30 or 50 player, had played one 100 before and won it. At level 4 i have 1050 chips in the BB and the following hand comes up:

I find Kc9d in the BB and all fold to SB who calls, i make it 250 hoping to take it there but he delays then calls. The flop comes J42 all clubs and he bets out 200, i see this as a very weak bet and i raise to 500. He then stalls for a very long time and pushes in, i only have 400 left and decide to call for pot odds but beleiving i am beat. Turn comes 2 river comes A neither are clubs and i figure im dead. He turns over (get this one) EIGHT TWO OFFSUIT!!! he called my PF riase and pushed all in with bottom pair after a raise with bottom pair and terrible kicker. Anyway i was out wondering what the hell had just happened. Now how did i misplay this hand, cause i know i must of done something wrong, but still that is probably the worst hand i've ever been involved with, 82o i'll never see coming.

I don't know alot about NL but I think that after you decided to raise the flop you might as well have pushed all-in since were commiting yourself to the pot anyway. The larget bet might (probably not in this case) have folded off your opponent.

There was probably a better way to play the hand altogether and I'd be interested to hear what other people have to say.

Pot sized raises! If you're going to pot commit yourself on the flop, at least give your opponent bad odds to draw and make him be the one to make the decision to call.

Lee- I know you are a big fan of the pot-sized raise, but there are plenty of times when it ain't enough, this might have been one of them. It has nothing to do with odds, since often we're playing against people who have no clue what that means. It has to do with scaring the shit out of them, making them decide that if they want to play it's gonna cost them (possibly) all their chips. It's psychological mostly, and just betting the pot doesn't always cut it.

Both of his raises were underbets of the pot, which is why I suggested raising the full pot. I'm saying he's raising too little, not too much. And even if other people don't know the odds, if you play them correctly, you will win in the long term.

Ok, here it goes. Either the player thought you were on a blind steal, was calling simply because you were giving action, or just was defending the blinds. When the flop came, if you believed his raise was a weak one, you should have bet it HARD, perhaps all in. I know if I pair up on the board and someone raises me hard, I would be inclined to fold it. As for playing 8 2, some people like the challenge of playing comlplete garbage hands to try to win a pot, maybe even more so than holding pocket aces. I had that happen when I had Qd 10d. He flipped over 2 7 clubs when two pair hit the board and had gone all in. Luckily, I hit a third ten AND the flush draw I had. You never feel more satisfaction when someone is trying to suck you out that way and you totally bust them.

bond 18, if you are going to play hands like the one you had, against one player, you must go all in pre flop.ljh

I believe all-in preflop here is a terrible mistake. Only bad things can happen when you risk 1050 chips to win 100. More times than not your raise or even a slightly larger one will take down the pot.
