Too aggressive on this draw?, mkpoker, 7. Dec 2003 19:47 | ||

| We're online playing 5/10 HE at a table that's tighter than usual for UB. Blind-stealing is a profitable play here, which I find is quite unusual for online low limit. From MP, I'm dealt QTo and limp following an EP limper. All fold to the button who raises. The button is the most aggressive player at the table. He has loose raising standards and like me has been stealing many blinds. He's obviously not trying to steal here (with 2 limpers in), but given his tendencies, I'm not giving him credit for a premium hand. The blinds fold and we're 3-handed. Flop comes 9cJs5s, giving me an open-end str8 draw (I have no spades). EP checks. I bet out. Button calls, EP folds. Turn comes 3c, putting a backdoor club draw on the board. Again, I bet out. Button now raises. I can't put him on a specific hand, though I doubt he's got just a club draw--I figure he must have something good to raise on the expensive street, especially since I've been driving the action. So I figure I'm well behind, but I've obviously got the right odds to draw, so I call. The river comes 4h--a total blank. I raise the white flag and check, and then fold when he bets I thought about making a bluff at the river in case he was on a busted flush draw. But even if he were, he could probably beat me with a crying call (if he were on a draw--which I doubt--it HAD to be A or K-high). What do you think of my play here. Too aggressive on the flop and turn? Bet the river as a bluff? All comments welcome. | ||

| Actually, I mostly disagree with your preflop decision on this hand. I would have folded this hand immediately, rather than limping with it. QT off is really only playable occasionally from late position, in my opinion - virtually never from any other position, regardless of whether the game is loose, tight, aggressive, or passive. After seeing the flop, you give yourself a better chance to win the pot by playing aggressively. I have no problem with that. Although you could have bet the river as a bluff, I think you would've been called an extremely high percentage of the time - looks like you were against a real hand here. So, checking and conceding was probably correct. Mark | ||

| I agree with Mark about the preflop call. Muck that cheese! When I first read the post, I thought the puck might have something like AK or AQ of clubs and decided to come alive when he picked up a draw. Then I figured betting the river as a blank would work out often enough to show a profit, but when you said he's make a crying call with an ace high, that went out the window. I'd check and fold. Besides, I wouldn't figure him to bet an AQ or AK busted draw on the river, so he probably doesn't have one of those hands. The monday morning quarterback read is Kc Qc or a set, jacks or nines. Nice play after the flop. Lee | ||

| ADAM THE EXPERT was going to answer this one, but if you can get an answer from Mark Gregorich, that's almost as good, though not as entertaining. Ha ha, tee hee hee. I didn't notice, when I commented about him before, that he was a "major contributor" (Just what does that mean, anyway) A.T.E. | ||
