| OK, I give up! It's time for me to jump on the shove-it-all-in-and-see-what-happens bandwagon, or no-limit if you prefer. I'm pretty much alone out there in limit land performing the true art of poker, (take turns flaming), where my art isn't really appreciated. (Damn rivers). Rant stop.. My NL experience is..well limited. Apart from a few $1 buy-ins at Pokerstars and some micro limit cash games, I have just finished a $5+0.50 Sit n go. Placed 2. Held ATo against 72s, honest to gosh. Another 2 on the turn. I have come to the conclusion that there must be a goldmine out there. I'm pretty sure that going all-in with 76o is not the smartest move when the UTG player already raised the blinds with half his stack. I saw this at hand 3 or 4. Same guy who won the whole thing BTW. This I will not do.....often. I am fairly patient, and wait for good(ish) starters. Always been a fan of big cards, (one of my flaws in LL games, not playing drawing hands well enough, (screw the odds, implied or otherwise, big cards should win over small cards IMO)) and big cards is good in SIAIASWH games, (See above), right? Rant stop 2 My problems: 1. Playing draws from the flop onwards. That may be good in LHE, but deadly in SIAIASWH or NLHE? 2. How much to bet? I have no idea. Bet the pot? X2, X4, X8 or what? For instance, the before mentioned Sit n Go. First orbit.. Dealt KQo (a so-so hand) in MP, folded to me. Blinds 10+20=30. I raised 60 to a total of 90, just to test the water. Is that a good, OK or awful raise? Of course someone made a huge re-raise with A something and I folded. I'm not asking for a magic formula here (would be nice though), but some general guidelines to help me on my way. How much to bet is what I think will cause me the most trouble. Any help would be appreciated. Book recommendations with good betting advice perhaps...super/system the way to go? Disclaimer: I don't mean to offend anyone with my reference to SIAIASWH, it's just that as a limit player, it's frustrating to see heaps of NL tables and Sit n Go's and then have to wait for ages for a L Sit n Go to fill up. I usually don't play during peak hours. Besides I don't think the limit players are all that bad (pokerstars/paradise 1/2 2/4). I believe the truly awful (and great) players wade the waters of NL. Probably because of WPT and other great shows I'll never get to see here in Norway. | ||

| Well, as always the correct move varies 'depending on the specific situation', but here are some generalities. Typically you want to open for 3-4x the BB, and you usually want to raise rather than call if you are going to play. (again, sometimes w/ a hand like your mid rank suited connectors or small pairs you might want to call, but we are talking in general) Your big cards are very desirable in no limit, and your drawing hands can be less valuable because good opponents will make you pay an incorrect price to make your draws. You also have to be cautious of what you start w/ because someone can reraise you a most or all of your chips and if you have a mediocre hand there is no way you can call and you are out your original bet. After the flop, if you are going to bet I say bet the same amount every time whether you have a made hand or a draw. Again, smart players have a chance to read your bets if they vary. Also, if your on a draw and bet small, someone comes over the top and then your not getting the right price and your out the original bet. Good luck w/ your change to NL. I play both and I definately prefer NL in tourneys. I am on the fence about cash games. (I like NL, but being able to loose your whole buy in in one hand can be a bit scary) Good luck! Lee | ||

| Thanks for the reply Lee Vaughn. What about the latter stages, turn/river. I see players play NL almost like limit when they don't have much of a hand. For instance on the turn there is somehow 900 in the pot (tourney example), I bet 200, that may very well make someone call, because of odds or whatever the reason. That's good if I have a hand that is very strong. Then again if I have a weak hand and therefore don't want to be called, I bet big, people will pick up on that and punish me for it. Would a pot size bet be better as a general rule...redusing their odds and also disguising my hand, making them guess. Or is my pot size thinking way off? | ||
