How many hours to estimate win ability?, LKP, 7. Dec 2003 17:03

Man, my skin has really toughened up. I used to get sick when I would sit down at a NL $25 game and lose my buy-in. I guess I'm over that now. Yesterday playing 3/6, I won about 300 bucks in like 3 hours. Today I lost about 350 in 2 hours. Played a little more today, dropped down 110, and climbed back up to being $6 in the positive. Everytime I got beat, it was a bad beat or someone landing their draw on the river. The one thing I have to work on is when to lay it down, cause the crazy no-foldem holdem people are such aggressive bettors that often I will throw in a little more money just to be sure. You'd be surprised how many times I've actually ended up winning after all.
It really puts things in perspective. Your bankroll will take mighty swings, but as long as you exploit the slight advantages everytime, you will win.
Now, my question is how to estimate my win ability. How many hours would you say I need to keep track of to get a good, safe idea of how many big blinds I win in an hour? I would think it needs to be more since I'm playing such wacky, fishy 3/6. I heard 30 somewhere, but I'm thinking more like 100.
100 hours? Do you think that would be enough?

Are you playing online or B&M? 250 will give you a rough estimate if you're playing online, but it's possible that it will still not reflect your true ability.

Hi

I don't think you are even close....My best to worst 250 hour swings have a HUGE difference between them.....If you want to be reasonably accurate, I would say at least 2000 hours. Even my best to worst years, my HR at the same game have had as much as a 20% difference. That said, factors other than luck may have made up some of the difference.

It all depends on your standard deviation . Get StatKing outcome tracking software and have David Sklanski and Mason Malmuth do the calculations for you. This sofware will tell you all you need to know .

My guess between 800 and 1000 hours for 67% confidence with in a few bucks.
