| Help! Playing six months. Read all the books twice and have tried hard to stay close to strong basic's. I was involved in a local Tournament this past week-end 120 plus players. Made it to the final table ( No-Limit) Seven players. Blinds 8 and 16 thousand. I'm the big blind. Everybody folds to the small blind and he calls my bet. I have AK suited and raise it to 32 thousand. He calls the flop is J, 10, 4. He goes all-in. I only have 12 thousand left and call the bet. Did I play this hand correct or should I have gone all in before the flop. The turn and river did not save me. I knew he had the jack. Looking forward to your answers, Joe Granatelli | ||

| If you knew he had the jack, I think at that point you can surmise his possible hands, AJ, KJ, QJ or J10. Due to above I would fold. | ||

| You should have gone all-in before the flop. Saving 12k doesn't help you as it's not even a full bet. It might not have made any difference, but could have gotten him to fold. Once you bet, 32k and get called, you're going down with this hand if it doesn't hit, so no sense in letting him have the opportunity to get away from his hand if he misses the flop. | ||

| You can't judge your decision by the result of the hand, but I'd suggest raising all in before the flop. This allows you to get more money in the pot with what presumably is the best hand, while also giving your opponent a good reason to release his hand and allow you to pick up his small blind and call. Even if you raised all-in before the flop, you probably would not have dissuaded his call and the outcome would not have been any different, but I think that going all-in before the flop is the best play under the circumstances. After all, there's only a one in three chance of you flopping something to your A-K, and if you do, a bet on your part will probably drop any opponent at that juncture who is not holding an ace or a king too. | with the size of your stack vs the blind size I would of put it all in preflop you not likely to see any better all in hand than AKs in the next two orbits. However if a few of the remaining players were on very short stacks you might have wanted to fold and try to survive into a higher seat finish. this would be the case if the caller was forced to call all in to your raise because he was so short stacked AND you think that some other two players will blind off or go bust before you do. bUT IF YOU MAin goal is to WIN the thing going all in preflop is your best bet to do so . | ||

| Timmer, Thank you for your answer. It will help in the future. The hardest part of these $40.00 turny's is everybody plays with no fear of loss, based on their investment. I've studied Hold-em very hard for quite some time now and think I should step up just a little to create a better group to learn from. Again thanks Joe Granatelli | ||
