The right play ?, fastguy40, 7. Dec 2003 16:39

Hope you guys can help me with a play I was in last night in a No Limit game. Have been playing for six months and tried to learn all the right ways through books and correct method.

Seven people @ the table. Blinds are 8 and 16 thousand. I'm the big blind. Everybody folds to the small blind. he calls my bet. I have AK suited. I raise 32 thousand. He calls. The flop comes 10, J, 4. He goes all in. I only have 12 thousand left. I call the bet. I know he has the Jack. Should I have went all in before the flop or did I play in right. The turn and river did not save me, even with some 12 outs.

Thank you for your help,

Joe Granatelli

You should definitely move all in before the flop. Your raise of 32,000 is only twice the big blind and that is too small a raise to begin with. If you lose that Hand you will only have 4000 left after posting the small blind so you're going to be crippled anyway. You're much better off risking it all on your AK; your opponent may have folded for the bigger raise but if not you're getting your money in with the best hand. You're going to be pot committed by leaving yourself 12,000 so it's better to give yourself an extra way to win the pot (making him fold pre flop) by moving all in.

Thank you very much. I lost sleep over that move, but will not let it happen again. I'm learning.

Thanks again,

Joe

By the way, did you raise to 32,000 or BY 32,000 (to 48,000)? If it's the former, you're giving your opponent 3 to 1 odds on his call and this is a terrible thing to do. A raise that only doubles the blind is almost NEVER a good idea because you're giving your opponent a cheap chance to hit his hand. If you had AA this might be OK but your hand is not good enough to trap him in this case.

I did what you said. I only raised to 32 thousand, instead of going all in.
