11-12 at a holdem table?, vest besterly, 7. Dec 2003 12:23 | ||

| I'm hosting a limit-NL tournament at home for the first time. I expect 8-10 to show, which would be perfect for 1 table play all night till we whittle down to the winner. But since we're only doing a $20 buyin I'm not going to be surprised if people bring freinds/girl friends and the like to swell it to 11-13 (the more the merrier I say). I would automatically say that over 10 people we should break into 2 tables until we hit 6 or 8 left, accept that these people have rarely or never played holdem, and with the logistics of blinds raising every half an hour, and the bet going from 50 max to NL after 11/2 hrs, I'm going to be looked to as the authority no matter what little thing comes into question, and to be called over to worried faces at another table every 5 minutes is going to be a big hassle. Can I just seat more than 10 people at my table and keep it easy on myself? I know technically I could seat 23 people at a table since it's my home game, but is there any reason I can't immediately think of why this is a bad idea? Also, how do you handle miss-deals from people who aren't familiar with the concept of burned cards and the like? I was just helping a few friends practice last week when the dealer (having never played hold'em) repeatedly forgot to burn cards. It was bad enough that I routinely just told them to play whatever he layed on the board and that eventually he'll learn not to. One friend vehemetly complained when this guy through a Q down on the river after failing to burn, I told them to play it anyway, and sure enough my friend was right to complain as the Q had made the opponent he was heads up with a str8. How do you handle miss-deals without embarrassing anyone, but without being unfair either? I want these people to regularly play in our tourny and have fun, not feel like they're in for a night of serious poker amongst hardliners. This is my chance to drink and have fun and not concentrate too hard vs. my online poker play and of course I would like everything to go well despite the fact that these people will need to be reminded what a "flush" is. Your thoughts and advice? | ||

| Is there a hard fast rule that you have to burn a card? Generally at our home games we overlook the burn card and only call miss deal on hands that get flipped up. Also, if you have 2 tables just make sure you have someone who knows what they're doing sit at the other table to run the game. It's only $20 so it's a cheap night of entertainment so have fun with it and don't sweat the small stuff. | ||

| We don't really worry about burned cards too much at a home game either. Some of the people do it when they deal, others don't or they forget (especially after drinking a few) We just play that whatever card he puts up is the card that plays. If they did or didn't burn one and you get a card you don't like... oh well, it's not a very serious game anyway. | ||
