what do you do to get your confidence back, spawgan, 7. Dec 2003 12:03 | ||

| Just curious, what other people do when they run into a river of ice cold cards. I had one of the most demoralizing days in my poker career yesterday and I know my confidence is shot. I know I played well but got bitten to many times to count yesterday. An example of the pain, I flopped top 2 pair 3 times, flopped a set of Qs, hit an ace high flush and had pocket Ks cracked 3 times. I have no confidence in my game. I have gotten almost gun shy raising. It has my second guessing decisions. I know I need confidence to play this game, but how do you get it back. | ||

| After a bad run of cards, what I seem to be doing lately is showing up late at night to play short-handed 50/100. Since the best players won't play this low, I almost always find myself playing with people who don't quite know how to play short-handed. I find I can run them over fairly easily, so that I would have to run horrendous to have a losing session. So perhaps my advice may be to drop down in stakes, and play in games (short-handed or full, depending on you) where your edge is greatest. This way, you're more likely to book some wins to regain your confidence. | ||

| You need a bad run of cards to drop down to the 50/100 level? May I ask what you play when you are running good? Good advice tough, but coming from me it would be more like .50/1.00. on 7. | Whats the difference between his Killer Poker book and Killer Poker Online book? The covers look similar and and look like they came out about the same time. Do they pretty much over the same stuff, and is their any reason to get either over the other? | ||

| I feel your pain. What works for me when I have hit those low points and seem stuck in poker purgatory is to take a break and read. I go back to the books and lean on the experts for a while - reload the knowledge base, if you will. Then when I'm ready to get back into the game, I do a bit of mental preparation. I actually do a little bit of self-talk and remind myself of how I will play my best game (for an example check out my blog, if you wish http://www.kebzweb.com/blog ) This works. Each time I get back in, I make a vow to change at least one bad habit - the latest one being not quitting when I know I should - especially when I was taking a beating. Don't beat yourself up. If you were playing good poker before the dry spells and bad beats, have confidence in that fact and know that you will get it back. Good luck! http://www.kebzweb.com | ||

| Something I read here once has helped me a bit. I rarely quit just because I am up, but when I have a string of losing sessions, if I get up early a good bit, I quit and leave the table a winner. Do this once or twice and you leave on a positive note, and don't have to question so much what you did. Just don't get into a habbit of leaving early all of the time, just something to do if you feel your game has dropped simple because you have lost a few times due to cold streaks or whatever. | ||

| I think that's a totally acceptable and smart choice Candide. Although you should stay in games where the potential for you is there (like you also mentioned)... if leaving on a good note means that you'll feel better about yourself and that you'll be able to play your next session with even more confidence than the one before....than by all means quit the game early. Positive thinking is important and it helps you to make those level-headed decisions. If it works, do it. Poker is a never ending game with many nuances to it, and confidence is key, in my opinion, as well : ) 4P- | ||

| I agree with you. If you don't have confidence when you sit down, your game will pale in comparison to what it normally would be if you had it. Players pick up on those things pretty quickly too. Flakes | ||

| Take a break, reread theory of poker and one of the Advanced player series. Look at my win /loss / playing statistics and work on game selection. if that fails find a game full of dealers ~( :^D) | ||
