Several folks at a local card room where I play have a lot of fun discussing poker slang (and the slang, of course, is the REAL reason to play poker!). We have been trying to track down the origin of one hand in particular, and we have all come up empty for months! So -- does anyone know why a 10-A straight is called "Broadway" or "Downtown"?

Thanks for any thoughts.

B

I really have no idea, but as your post hasn't got any attention, I'll throw something out there and see if it raises interest. Broadway would be the BIGGEST, STRAIGHTEST street, likely to take you straight to downtown, A-high straight is the biggest straight. Wow, made more sense in my head, lol. Anyone else want to try?

Sounds like a reasonable origin.

In the index of S&M's Advanced Hold'em, they list the origin of some hand names, so you could try there (I don't have my copy on hand).

Thanks, Brian. Yours makes as much sense as any other explanation I've heard!
