| I usually play 2/4 hold em and today after playing for an hour i was up a bunch Then for some inexplicable I decided to play 1/2. It's been a while since i played 1/2 since i found a niche in the 2/4 games. Well you can probably guess what happened next. I got my ass handed to me. I tried switching tables numerous times,I tried tightening up, and then loosing up nothing worked. Of course like a block head I wanted identify the problem and i kept trying but well all I can say is that i'm a winning player at 2/4 and a losing player at 1/2. This could have just been one session from hell but it realy had me stumped. Finaly after all my frustration I flop a straight straight starting with K,Js. The flop was 9,10,Q. Later followed by Q,2. A loose passive calling station type player had a pair of tens. I of course had bet it too the max and been called by multiple players and there was hundred dollars in the pot which is a lot in a 1/2 game. So the question is should lower limits be avoided like the plague or am I just failing to make the proper adjustments? I'm still trying to figure out how I lost more in one 1/2 session than i have ever lost playing 2/4. | ||

| For some reason, 1/2 games , more than any other, seem to be just showdowns. There are exceptions, of course, and I agree that everyone tends to play at limits they can afford, so you're always going to find "river rats" and chasers. (A couple of weeks ago I was at a 6/12 table at Harrah's in New Orleans. I drew a Kh-Qh, and others capped the pre-flop raising. The flop was Ah-4h-9h. So I have the nut flush, and again the betting and raising is capped. The turn and river were a black 8 and a black 4, and again the betting was capped. Well, you guessed it -- some schmo filled up his 8-4 offsuit hole cards to beat my flush!) At 1/2 games in particular, though, this is a problem. My only advice is to tighten up ALOT. What I also do when I get stuck at a game like that waiting for whatever table I really want to play at is to follow the maxim that if it's ggod enough to call, it's good enough to raise. I never see the flop because "it's just a buck," and I don't let anyone else do it either. If they're going to chase to out draw me, they're going to have to pay for it. It's still only a buck, but when I resolve to do that, I find myself not only playing tighter, but only playing really premium hands. And one last thing -- FOLD, FOLD, FOLD! If my hand isn't made on the flop, I muck it! I don't care if I have an A-Ks, if I don't pair or get two cards to my flush or straight, I'm gone. And unless I have really good pot odds, if I don't get my fifth flush or straight card on fourth street (I mean AT LEAST five or six other players), I won't buy river. (Remember -- with the kind of players we're talking about, table image is almost meaningless, and either they're not sophisticated enough or they don't care enough to respect a play that at higher limits would be a bluff. You can't "represent" having a hand, because they don't understand the move!) In short, think of these players like children playing chess. A child can learn to take your queen with one of his chess pieces, but learning to plan out the entire game is another matter. In very much the same way, these poker players don't play the whole game or even the whole session. They play one hand at a time, with no regard for what preceded, or what might follow, any given hand. Good luck! | ||

| Bill thanks for the reply. You made some good points. Preflop raising works real well for me in the 2/4 games as people respect that you might have a reason for preflop raising but when i was in the 1/2 game almost always six people would see the flop. When i preflop raised with hands like A,K or AQ i raised to increase my chances by chasing people out but would almost always be out drawn as no one had any respect for the raise. | ||

| lol LJH dthat's what i was asking myself after i lost. Everyone says that moving up cost a lot of money. I thought if i was doing well at 2/4 maybe i could relax and pound 1/2 just for kicks. I guess I couldn't have been more wrong. The good news is i went back to 2/4 and won 98 dollars today. So I guess life will go on. Poker is just a baffling game. Heck maybe if I go to 4/8 i'll do even better. lol | ||
