Did I just get lucky in the result? thoughts plz., Ostebovik, 6. Dec 2003 16:26 | ||

| I was playing 6-12 at the local cardroom at a pretty typical table. Most players not too aware, playing too lose and going too far w/ their hands (mainly because they sucked out from time to time). There were, however, 2 dealers who's play I respect. I've been playing solid for about 4 hours and am up about 10 BB. I Know the table respects/fears my raises as I no longer am getting the action I was early in the evening. However, there is action when I take my foot off the gas. I'm thinking it might be time to mix things up by either limping w/ AA or raising w/ a hand such as 98s. I'm in seat 4 and third to act pre-flop. UTG folds and Dealer1 limps in. I've got QQ and raise. I don't even think about limping here as this table plays Ax and K9+ suited or not. It's folded to the button, a too loose elderly man playing to catch on the river w/ many hands. He raises, folding the blinds and the limper calls. I decide to overplay my hand and look to create the impression I have a bigger pair, AA, so if I do catch my Q it'll be a big surprise. I cap the betting and it's called by both. At this point I'm putting the dealer on AJ, AT, KQ or TT as I've seen her limp w/ these types of hands and there was not a lot of variation in her play. The Button I had on a wide variety of hands from AA to TJs. The flop came A95 rainbow. It's checked to me and I bet out. The button raises, limper folds and I 3-bet to try to get a reaction from the button. He sighs and just calls. At this point I'm putting him on a big pair like KK, QQ or JJ but odds of QQ or not good and don't think he'd raise w/ JJ so KK looks like his hand. Turn is a T completing the rainbow. Dealer curses under her breath (she had TT), I bet out. Button reluctatly calls. River is a another 5 pairing the board. I bet out and two players at either end of the table say "he filled up". Button mucks his hand face up w/ a disgusted sign. KK I lay my Q's face up on board and rake the pot. It takes him a second to realize what happened but when he did he was pissed. He bought in for another rack and proceeded to get the table fired up taking everyone, except me for a wild ride. I used that bluff to change the energy at the table but I wonder if this was something that should be used or did I just get a good result from a poorly thought-out plan. What do you think? By the way, I ended the night posting an impressive win. Thanks in advance. Gerard. | ||

| Getting someone to muck the winning hand is not really luck. The fact that he did it on the river apparently without you betting is a bit lucky but you set him up for it. SpaceAce | ||

| So your raises are getting a lot of respect. And then someone 3 bets you. And you make it four bets? Pretty borderline... I guess you could make a case for it, but if you have such control of the table, maybe you should wait for a better spot. Then on the river, you got lucky that the button wasn't a smart cookie. Why does he call the turn and then fold on the river? Most players won't do that, it is only one more bet. Lee | ||

| You obviously had a great read on this player and your plan worked to perfection. I do believe you got lucky that this guy was to dumb to call your river bet | ||

| oops! I pressed send before my reply was done. Bottom line: I would say that only if this guy was a very weak passive player who mucks his hand at any sign of strength would I attempt this play. You described this guy as loose and tries to catch on the river. I think this is the wrong guy to make this play on even though your plan worked. It sounds as though you were having a successful day so I would just continue doing what you were doing and maybe wait for a good time to semibluff on the turn against a tight player. | ||
