Button questions, C.A. Adkins, 6. Dec 2003 10:54

I was in a no limit tourney a few weeks ago when small blind busted out. Next hand he is supposed to be the button. I'm interested in the rules for this. The people who ran the tourney left the button where it was before that hand and made the next two people post blinds. In my opinion button should've moved and made the blinds move with it. There were only five of us left and when the small blind busted out it left four of us. What is the rule on this. There have been times when I have seen the button have to post a blind. Is there a way to clarify this accoring to the rules? Is there an easy way to remember where the button goes and who posts the blinds when someone busts out? Thanks...

You never pay a blind twice. You never miss a blind. Button doesn't matter. Just keep that in mind.

Sometimes that can mean there isn't a small blind in a hand...If the big blind busts out, the previous UTG is now the BB (as he always would be), however the small blind is the person to his right...normally the previous BB, but he busted out, so do you make the previous SB pay twice? Of course not.

If in your situation, you moved the blind, what happens? Someone skips out on paying a blind. That is far more unfair than someone being the button twice.

Two ways to play it:
1. Button stays where it is and Blinds are posted as they would have been, remember all players (still in the game) must post BOTH of their blinds, this keeps things in order.
2. Move the button to the small blind and still have him post, then have both players to his left post a big blind, the following hand the button moves again and post its small blind (as it would be) along with the player to his left (who was just a the second big blind,so now there are 2 small blinds), the big blind post as it would. The next hand will bring things back to normal. The button will move and that individual who has posted his small and big blind will just be the dealer and the blinds will be where they should be. No one misses their blinds or post more than they should. You just get a little extra money in a couple of pots.
p.s. as I was told, rule #1 is the way its done for tournaments and #2 more so for cash games.
