if there are 40 combinations of straight flushes and 13 combinations of 4/kind, why does straight flush beat 4/kind?

Because you have that wrong. There are 13 combinations of 4 of a kind with 48 other possible cards as the 5th card. Add that permutation and it's not even close.

That's the easy answer. however, a 4 of a kind beats every other lower 4 of a kind REGARDLESS of the 5th card.

BTW the number of combinations is 624 (including the odd 5th card).
