Today's O8 hand- Flopping the nut straight with no redraws, lunchmeat, 5. Dec 2003 23:20

Here's a hand I took a bath on playing 3/6 at Paradise. (The game was exceedingly loose and even more passive)

After not playing a non-blind hand for almost 20 minutes, I open limp in EP with Ah, Jh, Jd, Tc. MP posts blind and raises, MP2 cold calls, CO (player to right of button) cold calls, blinds call, I call.

Flop: 9c, 8c, 7s

Checked to me, I bet my straight. All call except MP2.

Turn: 6s (9c, 8c, 7s)

Checked to me, I bet, MP raises, everyone calls to me, I 3 bet, everyone calls.

River: 8s (9c, 8c, 7s, 6s)

Checked to me, I check, MP bets, everyone calls, I bang my head against the keyboard, then call.

MP won high with a queen high flush(Qs, Qc, 5s, 4d). BB won low holding 2,3,5,6 rainbow.

OK, I know my river call was stupid, so no one needs to remind me about that (I was steaming pretty heavy so I left after folding the next hand) and I probably wouldn't have called pre-flop if it weren't for the steam factor either. What I'm unsure about is my play on the flop and turn. I had the (for the moment) nut for high, but only 14 out of 44 river cards will still give me the nuts on the river. Was I right to jam with the best high? Or should I have thought of it only as a draw to the best hand because it probably wouldn't be best on the river?

(As an aside, I can't get over how much softer O8 plays than hold 'em at the same limits, especially at a site like Paradise.)

Yes, you did flop the nuts, (although I wouldn't be overly thrilled about it with a flush draw present), however, the turn card was awful for you. It now brings 2 possible flush draws AND a low is present now. Anyone with a made low, an uncounterfeitable low, a low and a flush draw, will be jamming the hell out of that pot. There were way too many cards for you to lose to now, and you should check-call the turn for one bet only - anything more than one big bet to you, you should fold, right on the turn. (I wouldn't even be hanging around to see the river card). When you 3 bet the turn, you're actually adding more potential earn for the made low hands with redraws. I understand about protecting your hand, but your hand isn't worth protecting anymore. Too many ways to lose with too many opponents in the hand.

Save those extra bets for when "you" are freerolling....not them. When the game is that loose (regardless of how passive it may have been), you need to be sitting there with a hand that can withstand all of the chasers. Redraw. You said it yourself. It's a must, especially in games like that. (Patience....)

Ok, here's your final answer, don't bother even looking at any

other answers, as this one is correct.

Even though Adam's life is rapidly coming to an end, I am

still, the number one authority in the world, on Omaha.

Ya, bud, you got it right. A straight on the flop, is not a made

hand, but a draw.

You are, of course, drawing to hope that no one makes their

draw.

a jack high straight on the flop, with a flush draw present, is

one of the "made" nut hands, that is a clear check and fold

situation.

when playing omaha, allways ask yourself: "what two cards

can hit, that i like"?

In this case, out of all the 2025 combinations of last two cards

possibilities, only 11 (slightly more than one half of one percent.

are favorable to you!!! ( K and Q, without making a flush possible.)

anything else, either you are "lowed" or "beaten"

Add to this, that there is a very good chance that someone else,

has a jack ten, and you will be quartered, and you can see

why Adam the Expert, and anyone else that knows omaha,

would throw the cards away, as though they were blank.

If, and only if, the flop comes without a flush draw, may you

call with this hand.

but do not, repeat do not, go into a raising war, until the river,

with at least five players.

Omaha, is not hold em, it's nowhere near hold em, and you

need to totall reprogramm your mind, if you want to win.

When I'm back in the institution, someone please visit me.
