Pocket Pairs on the Button, Jojo, 5. Dec 2003 20:55

I play 25/50 nl/pl, mostly 25 pl.
The not quite so strong pocket pairs on the button, ie 6-7-8.
Lets say 10 person game and i got 4 ppl in behind me, do you think its a good move to double the bet to show control after the flop?
I feel the only worth of these pocket pairs are if you make the set because they generally don't fold, especially if they made an ace pair regardless of kicker :). This doubled bet seems to allow for a good chance to get a free look at 4th. As an added bonus, its very effective if you make your set when an ace or king falls too because they are not going to make you for a set.
I am wondering is it worth giving the extra bet, even though I'm only going to be connecting around 1 out of 7 times or so on the flop?

I would think no...

See the flop for 1 bet. You are getting 3 cards to try and make your set for this one bet. After that you are paying 1 or more bets per card to try and make the set. If you miss it on the flop, don't chase it anymore and just get out of the hand. That next bet is better spent seeing a new flop with a new hand

Raising four limpers at NL with a medium pocket pair is generally not a good idea. The biggest drawback is that with four players already in and the blind yet to act, you're exposing yourself to a big re-raise if someone just called with a big hand. You have no business reopening the betting with such a weak hand.

Besides, such a small raise won't necessarily give you a free card on the flop or give you much control over the hand. Especially in the small NL games ... no one is going to lay down their hand anyway.
