How many bets should I have saved, Blade, 5. Dec 2003 16:23
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
I am 3rd to act after blinds with $2-4

1 EP call to me, I raise and get 2 callers both blinds fold

Flop 4h 7h 9c

Check to me

I bet , 1 mp callers, ep calls

turn 8c

ep bets, I raise ( in hindsight a mistake perhaps)
mp folds, ep reraises, I call (Perhaps here is where I should have gotten out)

River 5s

ep bets, I call (rather stupid at this point)

ep shows 10-6 for the straight (duh)

Anyways thought on when I should have let it go?

(thanks). I think that it's a tough call 'and' a somewhat tough laydown on the turn. Did you spend enough time in the game where you could get a read off of the EP? Does he limp in with small pocket pairs, Ax suited hands and things like that. Is he capable of betting into you on the turn with a pair and a draw. Or would he only bet and then reraise with the nuts? Is he that predictable where you could easily just fold to his raise on the turn. Alot of questions with alot of unprovided information I'm sure, but sometimes the more information you have on a particular opponent combined with what his tendencies are, could lead you to a more correct decision. If you had absolutely no prior information or not enough of it, than I would be more inclined to call the reraise on the turn with the intentions now of paying it off on the river. (especially in a heads up situation). If you don't know what his moves may be etc., he could have easily reraised you with top pair, a pair and a straight and/or flush draw. Perhaps he put you on a hand like AK and was making a play for the pot, who knows...but it does happen and I've seen it quite a bit, especially with on-line poker where players tend to try and get too "fancy". Should you always pay it off when you're sitting there with a premium overpair? When and if you don't your opponent, I think you should, unless the board is so ridiculously unfavorable for your holding and there is more than just one sole opponent in the hand. Like the other posters mentioned, once you call the turn, you're paying it off on the river also. *That* is a mandatory pay-off in my opinion. Question for you: How many times have you seen players make a re-raise like he did in a $2-4 game without having the nuts or close to it? (I'm just curious). Keep player notes as well, (as I'm sure you do), and write that one down.

well, now we see the real reason, "Blade" so viciously and unjustifiedaly,

attacked Adam the Expert. To steal my fame, just like Mark David Chapman,

killed John Lennon, for exactly this reason.

No way in the world, such a unclear, and utterly simple post, would have

generated this much attention, had "Blade" not made a name

for himself, by making up lies about Adam the Expert.

4 POKER, I pass the torch to you. You write a very intelligent answer,

and seem to know a lot.

lmao

Anyone have an aasci art generator to make Adam a symbol?

Adam, why the change? I must say it was refreshing to read a post from you in lowercase, now if we can just get 4 Poker to use paragraphs... =)

Your first line is confusing: "I am 3rd to act after blinds with $2-4 "

I am going to assume you are saying you had pocket 4's.

That being the case, this is one of those hands where you really gotta wonder how someone can play T6 into a raise for crying out loud from EP. (and hope he continues to do so). Your raise on the turn with your set should be fine, what could EP reasonably have? at best another set, but lets face it, dualing sets are relatively rare.

The crying call on the river is mandatory, who the hell would play T6 from EP against a raise? (or from any other position except *maybe* the big blind)

I can only assume you had a big pair of some kind. When he 3 bets the turn, you have to assume he has the straight, and it's probably time to let it go. Raising the turn to begin with is not a bad play, but the straight card that fell is somewhat scary. You're doing it for information and to knock out the MP player who may be on a flush draw. After he reraises, you got the information you wanted.

Also, once you call the turn with no chance to improve over the straight, you have to call on the river.

The real question should be...how long did it take for that guy to go broke?

Sure but that doesn't help me. I think the above situation is the one leak in my game right now.

Blade,

The guy calls your flop bet and then bets into you on the turn. He is not bluffing, in my opinion he has at least two pair (that is the hand I would put him on anyway). I would just call his turn bet hoping to improve and again I would call his river bet although I would not like it (hoping that perhaps he had some overpair like JJ or perhaps A10). That would have saved you two BB. If you can't lay your hand down on the turn and I don't think their are many of us out there that would have laid down those kings when he bet into us you can call him down and save those extra raising bets. The way that you went about it with a raise and then getting reraised you should have dumped it their in my opinion, but as someone else said if you call the raise you have to call the river most likely. When someone at these limits bets into you and then reraises your raise you are probably looking at the nuts or close to it, save your money for another hand. Good luck.

This fool should not have been in, You raise to get these fools out. I had him on a pair that he hit trips with. you have bailed after the turn. Just my opinion.

Blazman,

No, you raise because you hold a very strong hand and it's got great potential to earn you money- hence, they (K-K) are a part of your true money-making hands. IF the player held a smaller pocket pair, you should want them to call your raise preflop. You're a huge favorite there!
