I was just curious if you've seen people that just step in and can play poker like they have been taught by pros their whole life. So far I've seen two of them. The first one was a guy who was just ridiculous. He is the smartest person I know, and is currently at McGill working at his Doctorate making decomposable plastics. I asked him to play poker with us and he did. After playing a few sessions he was talking to me about things like pot odds, and starting hand selection and how low pocket pairs are pretty well useless. Meanwhile I had been reading poker texts which were saying the same things. It was like this guy was reading texts from pro's but in fact wasn't at all. It was the first time he had ever played poker.
The second guy is a normal buddy of mine. We had been playing pot limit hold'em for several play sessions. He was always doing quite well and I might also add that he had never played poker before really at all either. Then one day he was paying attention to a specific hand and asks: What is calling? I explain that it is matching a bet and not raising. He laughs at the guy and says: why would you ever want to do that? I only ever raise or fold.
This guy understood aggresive tight play without ever being told it before. I might add that he did know what calling was, he was just being funny.
I find it interesting how some people can walk up to a poker table with no experience whatsoever and understand such advanced theory so well. Whereas others, like me, walk up to a poker table and are the chumpiest calling stations that ever existed.
I was just curious if others of you have noticed such a phenomenon? I do have a very smart group of friends, definitely above average smarts but still...it was very interesting to see.

Never met one... including myself. Lost a BIG deal before I started turning a profit.

Howard lederer said he lost in limit holdem his first two years, so it would be interesting how many pros would fit into this category.

Poker is based on mathematics. It should not be surprising that people like Annie Duke, who is obviously brilliant (she was offered a couple of professorships at leading educational institutions before deciding to be a poker player) should be able to step into a poker game and find practical applications for their education. This is why it is such a beautiful game.

The first person in your example falls easily into this same category. The rest of us 'dimmer bulbs' have to learn these things the hard way!

As I've stated in another post previously: we all have different amounts of natural talent for poker. In this respect, poker is no different from other human activities (chess or dance or picking up women). Some people are prodigies. Some have a lot of natural talent that allows them to zoom to the top very quickly. Some have modest ability which coupled with some study and experience can make them winners. Others, no matter how hard they study and try, will never be more than break-even. And others will always be losers. Period.
Like I've said before, someone with real talent should be crushing the 20/40 game after a few months (or less) of play. These guys generally move up pretty quickly and will be playing 150/300 before long. Others will struggle and struggle and grind it out at 10/20. The difference is not discipline or studying or devotion but natural talent.
