How not to play a hand, Boftx, 5. Dec 2003 14:55

This is an example of how not to play a hand. I musta been in total brain fart mode for this and had I been on a full ring table instead of 6-handed I probably would have had my butt handed to me.

Even from the SB playing K7o isn't especially bright to start with. The Button had been fairly aggressive (and an abusive jerk as well) and I was surprised that he didn't raise to steal the blinds, I thought he might have a real hand. Nevertheless, I bet out on the flop with top pair lousy kicker. I had been betting, and winning, with TP a lot in this game and I think that was why Seat4 folded to me. Also, I didn't want to give up a potential free card to a club draw. The button just calls. I really expected a raise from him and so I forgot all about the free card danger and check the turn! This was a horrible mistake on my part with not one, but 2 flush draws on the board. I think I really needed to bet out to protect my hand, such as it was, and maybe get a better read on what the button had. Also, I routinely bet into a turn that doesn't bring a 3rd card to a flush if I feel an opponent might be on a flush draw. The river brings a possible back-door flush and probable straight. Of course I now bet it out, bluffing at the straight in my mind but hoping my top pair is good, just begging to be raised instead of checking it down. I would have folded to a bet from the button.

All in all, I think I played and read this hand badly and got lucky that button didn't make a good hand on the river. My guess is that the button came in with a small PP and figured me for the K from my earlier play when I bet out on the flop.

And no, I'm not going to accept invites from some of you to play on your tables.

I know you said that it was a mistake to check the turn because it gave him a free card with a potential flush draw and str8 draw, but why did you check in the first place? Were you going to check raise him? If so, what made you think he would bet? I would put him on a Q or a draw.

I was actually considering a check/raise here, which makes no sense if my read of him lying back and trapping is correct. This was the point in the hand where I really just let one loose that coulda taken my ears off.

WOOHOO!!!!
these are the kind of posts i love, they show the newer players that even those of us who study hard still fubble up every so often.

one problem with a forum like this i find is, when does information that is valid come with to high a price tag? making someone ashamed/fearful of making mistakes is not a good thing, recognising mistakes thinking about them and correcting them is much better *the analogy you learn alot more from losing than you do from winning*

Rule #1 of Poker
Circumstances alter cases
Rule #2 NEVER forget rule #1
