| Local club tourney...I manage to start the final 11 person table as the short stack after taking a bad beat right before we consilidated. I am not getting any cards and most of these players are new to the tourney scene and even with incredible chip stacks there still chasing flushes and straights. We are losing players left and right and all of a sudden I'm finding myself just getting out of there way as there dropping out. The fifth person remaining gets blinded out basically and were down to the four remaining and their battling even though they have atleast 10x's or greater more chips then I do.... Here is my question...I become the button and pick up AKs and watch as the UTG goes all in which is only double the BB so I'm pretty sure one of the blinds will call him so I lay it down in the hopes of the short stack busting out and putting me in the money.... The question: I could of went in with a pretty decent hand and possibility almost tripled my money, the short stack ended up winning and I got knocked out in the SB a couple of hands later when I was all in....Do you take your shot or do you get out the way and try to back in? | ||

| The correct play depends largely on the payout structure of the tournament and the chip position of the other 3 at the table, yourself included. Lee | ||

| whats the prize money? Top 4 paid? How much? If I knew the other players werent that good, I would have pushed in my AK and hoped to triple up, giving me a slight chance of coming back and winning the tourney. If 4th paid a significant amount, I may have layed down like you did, but I seriously doubt. Being a small stack and getting dealt AK is like gold. | ||

| if you aren't playing AKs, then what are you playing? It's the best non-pair hand you can have. Are you playing to win the thing or just get into the money? I'd definitely play it. | ||

| You didn't mention your chip stack. If you had enough to make a significant raise that would fold the blinds, I would have gone all-in to get heads-up with the short stack. Also, if you didn't have enough chips to survive more than 2 rounds, you should definititely call. Otherwise, if the raiser doubles up, you'll be blinded out first. Then you'll probably be forced to make a stand with a hand worse than AK to get in the money. | ||

| Totally agree. You cannot lay down AK that late in the tourney with a short stack. The UTG appears to be making a desperation call as he has the blinds coming up and probably is playing any decent hand he gets with hopes to double or triple up himself. He prob has Ax or Kx possible suited connectors or small-mid pocket pair but I wouldnt give him much credit for going all-in. Heck I have made a move with 89s or TJ off from that postitiom before. I would almost guarantee your AK is an better hand than UTG or either of the blinds. You must raise all-in here, no doubt about it. | ||
