Another Omaha Question, Blazman, 5. Dec 2003 05:07
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Hi,

I've been playing Omaha online for a while at a free table. I totally clean up. Even more so than at Hold em. For some reason I feel the game better, i.e. I intuitively can feel the strength of my hand relative to others. I have been playing online because it's free and I can get to know the mechanics of the game. I have to imagine that the betting and the action is nothing like it will be at the casino. My question is... How different is that casino game? At foxwoods the lowest stakes are 5 10 with at Kill at 100. (which is what I may be able to play). And how much should I bring to that table (dont answer $50 or I'll come through this screen and slap you)

I almost never play Omaha and I am not in any way qualified to answer your question. So, of course, I am going to answer your question. I wouldn't buy in with less than $250 and I would keep another $250 on the table.

Hi -

You're correct, the betting and the action 'will' be different when you play the game for real money; but, having a great feel for the game is also very important and it can benefit you when you use certain betting strategies against your opponents.

I would say a good buy-in for that game would be around $300, maybe $400, because you mentioned that it's played with a kill. Good luck.

There are variations to kill pot games - but in this $5-10 game that Blazman is referring to will work like this : If a player scoops a pot and it has $100 in it or more, the next hand dealt will go to double that limit because he's playing with a full kill. The limit then goes to $10-20 and that player will be forced to post up ten dollars; the same amount as if it was his big blind in a $10-20 game. Now when that kill pot/hand is dealt, if the pot is not scooped, the very next hand goes back to the $5-10 limit. If it does get scooped (one winner) again, then it remains at the $10-20 limit and whoever wins that pot will be forced to put up "A Kill" as well. (There's a little bit more to it than what I just mentioned - perhaps someone like ADAM or Easy E will jump in and add more to the aspects of kill pot games).

PLACING EASY E, IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS ADAM THE EXPERT?

NOT AN ACCURATE THING TO DO. I DON'T KNOW EASY E, AND

HE MAY VERY WELL BE A GREAT OMAHA PLAYER/EXPERT, FOR ALL

I KNOW.

BUT, THERE IS OF COURSE, NO ONE IN THE WORLD, ANYWHERE

CLOSE TO ADAM THE EXPERT, AS FAR AS THE SUBJECT OF

OMAHA GOES.

(OK, THIS " MARK G IS VERY VERY VERY GOOD"

KINDA ALMOST IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS ADAM THE EXPERT

THE GOOD NEWS IS, KILL OMAHA GAMES, ARE A "GOOD THING"

IN FACT, THEY ARE JUST ABOUT THE ONLY SMALL LIMIT GAMES,

THAT CAN OVERCOME THE RAKE, PROVIDED THAT THERE

IS A LOT OF ACTION, IN THE KILL POTS.

ALTHOUGH ADAM THE EXPERT, HATES LARGE OMAHA GAMES

WITH A KILL (INSO MUCH AS THE AMOUNT YOU MUST PUT

OUT FOR A KILL, REPRESENTS A MUCH LARGER PORTION OF

THE STRANGE MONEY, AS MOST POTS ARE HEADS UP)

BUT IN SMALLER LIMIT GAMES (UP TO 6-12 FULL KILL)

THE KILL IS A GODSEND.

YOU GET PEOPLE PLAYING, THAT WOULD NEVER IN A MILLION

YEARS, SIT AT A TABLE THAT WAS THE "KILL AMOUNT"

(LIKE 10-20, IN THIS CASE)

BUT, IT'S PERFECTLY FINE, FOR THEM TO PLAY A 5-10 GAME

"OH, IT'S A KILL POT, OK"

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER, IS NOT TO GET

INVOLVED WITH A BULLSHIRT HAND, JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE

THE "KILL"

SO MUCH MONEY IS LOST, BY PEOPLE DOING THAT.

ADAM THE EXPERT, WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT CALL

A RAISE, WITH ANY HAND, THAT YOU WOULD NOT HAVE PLAYED

IN THE FIRST PLACE.

THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS, OF COURSE, BUT IF YOU

ARE DEALT A 5 7 8 K, YOU THROW THAT CARP IN THE MUCK,

AND DO NOT CALL A RAISE, JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE IN FOR

THE "KILL"

AS FAR AS RAISING, TO ATTACK THE "KILL" THIS IS REALLY NOT

AN ASPECT, OF LOW LIMIT KILL GAMES.

YOU HAVE ALMOST A ZERO PERCENT CHANCE, OF THE KILLER

FOLDING TO YOU, EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE IS IN.

STEALING THE BLINDS/KILLS, IS NOT A PART OF LOW LIMIT OMAHA,

THE ONLY GOAL: MAKE NUT HANDS, HAVE PEOPLE PAY YOU OFF.

DON'T BOTHER TO WASTE YOUR BRAIN POWER, EVEN THINKING

OF THIS SUBJECT

"UH, WELL IF I'M IN THE CUTOFF, WITH AN A 6 K J, AND THE

KILL HAS EXHIBITED A REASONABLE TENDENCY TO FOLD AT

LEST 43% OF THE TIME, SHOULD I RAISE"?

NO!!!!!!!!!

DON'T EVEN THINK IN THOSE TERMS.

MAKE THE NUTS, GET PEOPLE TO PAY OFF.

OF COURSE, ADAM THE EXPERT, KNOWS MUCH MORE

SOPHTISICATED PLAYS, FOR OMAHA HIGH LOW, BUT THAT

WILL COST YOU MY FULL PRIVATE TUTORING RATE, WHICH

I DON'T EVEN HAVE, SO THERE'S NO SENSE IN DISCUSSING IT.

KILL GAME=GOOD

NON KILL = LESS THAN GOOD

A.T.E. P.S. WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE, IS UP TO YOU,

BUT IF IT'S A GOOD GAME, I WOULD MAKE SURE NEVER TO

HAVE LESS THAN $240 IN FRONT OF YOU.

FOUR OR FIVE HUNDRED IS A GOOD AMOUNT, BUT DON'T GO

BELOW THE TWO FORTY FIGURE

Hey ADAM -

I was suggesting, that perhaps you and Easy E could elaborate a little bit further on the aspects of Kill Pots; (hence, it wasn't even a question that pertained to Omaha, although I'm sure you have much knowledge on the subject). Now, I have seen Easy E's posts before regarding the subject of Kill Pots and I thought that 'she' could delve into it alot further than I. I am also aware that 'you' have some knowledge to offer about it as well, so that's why I put the two of you in the same category! Fair enough?

Also....what's this crap I just read about your "Farewell to ADAM" post? You can't reach everyone - so supply what you know and let it speak for itself. If you reach just one person on this forum, then you've accomplished a great deal. Keep that in mind.

To answer your question, you can expect for the game in Foxwoods to be played with people who know what they're doing (somewhat) - hence, you won't see ten people calling all bets to the river and you may also see players making strategic moves, too. (example : someone may put in a raise in attempt to knock another player out who may be holding two pair with no low so he can take 3/4 with a nut low and top pair, for example). I'm sure you're also going to be playing against players who don't play the game well. Know who the good players are; play a tight/solid game and if you still get a strong (intuitive) feel when you play the game live and you can use that to your advantage, then do it. Omaha 'is' a mathmatical game however, having a good feel for the game/players will benefit you even more, too - and you may just have more of a knack for this game then you do for hold-em. Keep playing it, play it for real money and see if that's the case. It can be a very profitable game when it's played optimally *and* with a good intuitive feel - and in my honest opinion, most people who play Omaha, play the game incorrectly, so if you enjoy it and you're playing it correctly *with also* having a good feel for it, then add that in to the equation as well.
