Average Showdown Pot Size in LHE?, Bart Mann, 4. Dec 2003 13:41

Before anyone goes off and flames me for asking a question that isn't relevant or can't be accurately calculated (you know who you are), I would like to stress that I am simply looking for a best guess here--based on the respondent's personal playing experience at the limit he/she typically plays. So please, I encourage everyone reading this to take a stab at it. There is no wrong answer.

Here's the question--in a standard Limit Holdem ring game with a full table (10 players), what do you think the "Average" pot size is over the long term when hands go to a showdown, in terms of "Big Bets?" For example, if your game is 3/6 LHE and over time you believe the average showdown pot size is $60, that would be 10 big bets. I'm just curious what everyone thinks on this one. I began thinking about this the other day, when I was playing at the local B&M and won what I thought was a nice showdown pot at the 3/6 table--22 big bets. But then I realized that I don't really know how far above average that is, if at all.

And the logical followup question would be this--does B&M versus online affect average pot size? What about different areas of the country? Are pots bigger in Atlantic City than they are in Vegas? Or California? Thank you in advance for satisfying my curiosity.

p.s. For those of you who were going to ask, let's assume that a 'showdown' is where two or more players either put in or call the final bet after the river card is exposed.

7.5 BB seems like a reasonable average to me given the right game selection which of course is critical.

1-2 = 15
2-4 = 30
3-6 = 45
5-10= 75

I think 7.5 bb is a solid overall average, but showdown pots should be bigger. Even at a table that has an overall average of 7.5bb the showdown pots should be at least 2-3bb larger. Just my thoughts, check your favorite online sites, you will notice the average bb are larger late at night (U.S. Timezones) than during the day. Also Weekends have higher averages than weekdays.

When I play online I look for a table with over 10bb on average. I then check for a couple of weak players before I sit.

I'm not exactly positive, but I'm wondering if showdown pots aren't a little bigger at lower limits. We don't have 1/2 at my local B&E, but in the 2/4 games the pots go something like this:

7 players preflop x $2 = $14
5 Players pre Turn x $2 = $10
3 Players pre-River x $4 = $12
3 Players showdown x $4 = $12

TOTAL = $48

That's about 12 Big Bets or so. But then again, that's the lowest limit at my local B&M, so that's where the power drinkers, amateurs and Gus Hansen wannabes usually play. Thoughts?

I have limited b/m experience, but online at partypoker i can usually find a better than 10 bb avg game at 2/4 , 3/6, and even 15/30. When i do play at b/m i would not bea able to keep track of the avg pot size as i have to many other things to think/worry about. 5/10 and 10/20 seem to atract better players and I never see an over 10 bb avg.

Again the over 10 bb avg is usually at only 1 in 5-8 table at a given limit, and I think blades avg of 7.5 overall is correct if you count hands not going to showdown as well. For myself my eyes light up whenver i see over 10 bb avg, because that means people are overplaying there hands or playing too many hands, unless the last few hands have created some really good second and third best hands creating large pots. Set over Set, Full house to flush etc, AA vs KK, etc.

At different limits the size of the small blind has a large impact. 3-6 should avg less bb per hour than 2-4, because the sb is only 1/3 in and should defend less, while 15-30 should avg more than 20-40 because the sb is 2/3rds in and should defend more. Preflop calls lead to flop calls and so on...

I would like more information on how the online sites come up with thier avg pot size becuase it is important to know is form the last five hands or last hundred, etc. maybe Roy or Mike could tell us how it is computed at planet, most online sites use the same software in an outsourced delivery method so that calculation maybe how it is done at all/most online sites.
