Hold em, 21 outs on the river, Michael Berkowitz, 3. Dec 2003 14:39

Playing in a NL Hold em S & G today. I have a short stack and go all-in with AcQc. Everybody folds except for a big stack who calls with pocket 7h7d. Flop comes 9c4dJc giving me a nut flush draw. 10h on the turn gives me an open-ended straight draw as well. With my two over cards I now have 21 outs (9 clubs, 3 kings, 3 8's, 3 A's & 3 Q's) on the river.

My question, are their any situations where you can be heads up trailing after the turn and have more outs than this?

The river came 5h by the way and I lost the hand.

You have Jc Tc and the board reads 9c 8c 8h 6h up against a pair of deuces would give you 9 clubs, 6 straight cards, 3 jacks, 3 tens, 3 nines, and 2 sixes for a total of 26.

Yes, there definitely is. If instead of 9c,4d,Jc the flop would be 9c,Jd,Jc then if the river is a ten or nine, you win as well. That's six more outs. But in this case, a seven of clubs will no longer be an out since it will give your opponent a full house. So it's five more outs.

As a matter of fact if the turn were to look like this: 9c,Jd,Jc,Th, then you would have so many outs that you would actually be the favorite to win.

In the scenraion you described you will win only 48 percent of the time(21/44=.4772) whereas in 9c,Jd,Jc flop you are favored to win. 26/44=.5909. That's 59 percent of the time.
