PLAYER NOTES: A MUST DO!!, ADAM THE EXPERT, 3. Dec 2003 05:20
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
OK, SO MY NEW STUDENT, DOES NOT EVEN ANSWER ME,

EVERY TIME I ASK IF HE'S PREPARED TO MAKE PLAYER

NOTES: THAT MEANS, OF COURSE, THAT HE IS NOT.

I TRIED TO THREATEN HIM, BY SAYING I WON'T WORK

WITH HIM IF HE IS NOT WILLING TO TAKE PLAYER NOTES,

BUT MY BLUFF DIDN'T WORK!!

FINE, "MADA" IF YOU WANT TO WORK TWICE AS MANY

HOURS, FOR THE SAME PAY, BY ALL MEANS, DON'T MAKE

PLAYER NOTES

OK, OK. LET'S PLEASE PUT ALL THIS "IN SEARCH OF

ADAM THE EXPERT" STUFF BEHIND US, AND CONCENTRATE

ON POKER

I HAVE'N'ET SEEN THIS SUBJECT MENTIONED BEFORE

SO HERE GOES:

SINCE YOU DON'T GET TO ACTUALLY SEE YOUR OPPONENTS,

THE TAKING OF PLAYER NOTES: IS ESSENTIAL, FOR

ACHEIVING A MAXIMUM WIN RATE. ESPECIALLY IN

GAMES, WHERE MOST POTS ARE HEADS UP, AND IN

TOURNAMENTS.

SURE, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PLAYERS, AND THE

TASK SEEMS INSURMOUNTABLE, SO YOU JUST FIGURE

YOU WANT TO GIVE UP.

BUT, MOST PLAYERS TEND TO PLAY THE SAME GAME,

SO, UNLESS YOU'RE PLAYING SOMETHING LIKE

50 CENT DOLLAR HOLD EM, OR SOME OTHER GAME,

WITH A UNIVERSE OF 5,000 PLAYERS, EVENTUALLY,

YOU WILL HAVE NOTES, ON MOST PLAYERS.

TRUST ME, THEY REALLY ADD UP.

MAKE NOTES ON 10-20 PLAYERS A DAY, AND WITHIN

A COUPLE MONTHS, YOU WILL HAVE A VERY SOLID

NOTE BASE.

NOW, JUST WHAT DO YOU WANT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR

NOTES?

I JUST RECENTLY BOUGHT THE JOHN VORHOUSE BOOK,

AND GOT A GOOD LAUGH, AND THE DETAILS HE

INCLUDED IN HIS "PLAYER BOOK"

OBVIOUSLY, THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BEFORE THE

CHRIS MONEYMAKER-FULED EXPLOSION ON INTERNET

POKER!!!

JOHN, I'M MAD AT YOU!!! MY POOR BROTHER, ACTUALLY

BOUGHT FIVE LARGE NOTEBOOKS, AND HAS STAYED

UP MANY A NIGHT, TRYING TO MAKE HIGHLY-DETAILED

NOTES, ON EVERY 15-30 PLAYER, ON PARTY POKER.

MIGHT AS WELL TRY TO COUNT THE GRAINS ON SAND,

ON SANTA MONICA BEACH!!!

AND, EVEN IF YOU COULD SOME HOW COMPLETE THE

NOTES RECOMMENDED BY HIM, YOU WOULD NOT

BE ABLE TO ACCESS THEM, WITHIN THE TIME YOU HAVE

TO ACT.

THE NOTES WINDOW, PROVIDED BY THE ONLINE CASIONS,

PROVIDES AMPLE SPACE, TO MAKE THE KIND OF NOTES

YOU NEED.

USUALLY, I TYPE IN THREE OR FOUR PLAYS THAT THE

PERSON MADE, AND FROM THIS I CAN TELL THE TYPE

OF PLAYER THAT SHE(HE) IS.

ALSO, I HAVE A BOX OF LARGE INDEX CARDS, THAT I

USE FOR GAMES, WITH A VERY LIMITED PLAYER BASE

(SUCH AS 30-60 HIGH LOW STUD, ON POKERSTARS)

THESE CARDS (4" BY 6") ALLOW ME ENOUGH ROOM,

FOR A COMPLETE PROFILE, AND CAN BE REMOVED

FROM THE BOX, AND SPREAD AROUND THE DESK, SO

I CAN ACCESS THE INFORMATION, WHEN I'M IN A HAND.

BUT, IN ANY GAME, WITH HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS

OF TOTAL PLAYERS, YOU ARE "PISTONING UPSTREAM"

IF YOU TRY TO "WRITE A BOOK" .

EVEN A COUPLE VERY QUICK NOTES, ARE FAR BETTER

THAN NONE

"LIKES TO CHECK RAISE" NEVER BLUFFS"

CHECK RAISED AS A BLUFF.

"ALWAYS DEFENDS BIG BLIND"

IN TOURNAMENTS, HOW SOMEONE PLAYS THEIR

POCKET ACES AND KINGS, IS THE SINGLE PIECE OF

INFORMATION, THAT I LIKE TO CONCENTRATE ON, IN

MY NOTES:

ALSO, YOU MIGHT WANT TO MAKE A NOTATION, OF

WHO WAS PRESENT, WHEN YOU MADE A WILD BLUFF,

"IF YOU DON'T TAKE NOTE, YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO

AFFORD TO FEED THE GOATS"

YOU MAY QUOTE ADAM THE EXPERT ON THAT.

BY THE WAY, IN THE INTEREST OF NOT "PISTONING OFF"

SO MANY PEOPLE, I HAVE DECIDED TO REMOVE

ONE, AND ONLY ONE, FEATURE THAT PEOPLE DON'T

LIKE:

SO, LET'S HAVE A VOTE.

WHICH WOULD Y'ALL MOST LIKE TO SEE GO THE WAY

OF THE DODO?

THIRD PERSON NARRITIVE

Hi. Player notes are important. Mine also look like plays they make. Since I play mainly shorthanded, most everyone plays like their pants were on fire, so I do not write that down. I do note specific plays ("bluff raised on river") stuff that will help me.

Here is a note that helped: I had written down for one player "Likes to bet at flops". I had not played against him for a long time (only played once) so I had of course forgotten that until i read my note when I sat down. On an early hand, we were heads up after I raised with very little, and he bet out ona KJ8 flop.. I had an easy fold, but I called because of my note. On the turn he checked,I bet ansd he folded. Good note!

[Adam, I cannot stand the capital leters, I could care less about the spacing and what you call yourself. I am here to read poker content, and you actually have some poker content, but the capital letters make it much harder to read and understand.]

First, I can't stand the cap's. It is very hard to read. I find that most who do that are people with poor typing skills who do not like to use the shift key to use proper capitalization. I think you would find everyone would prefer all small letters as opposed to all large.

Anyways, on to you your main point, this is something I agree with a great deal. I mostly play ultimate bet, and found the note window to be somewhat limited in space. To compensate I have made a lot of short hand notation. Things like RPF is raised preflop. RR is reraised, etc.

I take notes on most anything that makes me say "huh?" or "nice play"...just something that stands out that gives an impression on the player, anything that catches me by suprise. Like you and Barry have stated, things like check raised with X hand. Likes to bluff a lot, or only raises with the nuts.

But please, stop the all caps and I can deal with the rest.

I think note taking is critical, an you should put the live ones on your buddy list. I just started usning pokertracker (pokertracker.com) it is amazing!!! Instead of my typical notes sees alot of flops, check raises often, etc. I now can insert from the pokertracker database, sees 49% of flops, check raises on flop with weak draws, etc. I found one donator that sees 95% of flops and folds to river bets 78% of time, is there a more perfect opponent? oh, I play 2-4 and 3-6 at partypoker.

Hey, Adam! I must say that, quite aside from the caps, 3rd person, double-spacing, I really like just the general tone of this message (in addition to the good advice)!
My vote would go toward eliminating the double-spacing, actually--you have to scroll down constantly to read through the message. The other aspects don't really matter much to me and add to the humor of the whole thing anyway... :)

I agree. One thing I try to get in all of my player notes are the "boundaries" of their starting hand selection. Like if I see a player in a hand with QTo from first position I will note such and keep doing so until I get a good idea of what that player will and will not play. This is a lost cause on some people so if thats the case I will just put something to remind me that the player is a freaking psycho(like "WTF?!"). The other important thing I try to keep is how aggressive players are and I usually rate this on a 1-10 scale, sometimes giving a seperate score for all rounds of betting(10 being most aggressive). I've just started keeping a tendancy to bluff scale which I rate from 11-20(to keep from confusing it with the other).

Obviously all of it is my best estimate but if I look at a player and see "WTF?! [36o 1st], (9,20) I can tell I have a live one.

I like those ideas. On your 1-10 is it raw quantity of aggression or does 10 also mean cleverly aggressive? Frankly, in all of the main concepts, I have a little trouble with any systematic approach to whether it's good or bad... really, the only one of the main concepts that I think one can say is automatically bad is "passive." But loose, tight and aggressive can all go both ways.
Another thing I like to note is variability. I notice some people playing a long loose phase, then going into tight mode. If you look at percentages of flops seen in pokertracker, you get a figure somewhere in the middle, but in actuality I think some people have 2 or more styles that they switch off between (again, sometimes in a clever manner, sometimes ineptly).

The numbers themselves don't mean that much. I wouldn't go and dump off all of my notes on another player and expect them to work well for him. What I hope is that by telling myself this guy is a SOLID 9,12 I will either remember him from a previous game or know I need to watch him to regain my feeling of what kind of player he is.

I agree with Adam that you should take notes. Not just online but live also. I used to carry around a small dictaphone and take notes that way.....It helped me learn feel and made me lots of money!

How do you know who is who? I do this in my head but it's getting tough. Do I just write down.. (dorky guy with beard, always puts his hand over his mouth when he has a pat hand) Which really happened, and as the cards came out and his hand did not improve he would slowly move the hand from over his mouth. This was without exception, I even gathered my friends to watch this.

Adam, how do I get to be your student?

I vote #4; add Tourette's syndrome and compulsive swearing.
Come on, who really cares about "pistoning off people" when you're giving them free advice? I say make it hard to understand. Look at Steven Hawkins. The guys a freakin' genious, and he sounds like Voltron. He's probably doing it on purpose, just to mess with us. And cause robots sound way cooler than scrawny white guys. I wish I could get my voice to sound like that. His voice is like the typing equivalent of quadrupal spacing everything and adding "..." between every word. Plus, if you just spent 5 years dicovering that space time-warp continue-ums hold the meaning of life or some shit like that, do you think you'd tell everyone without screwing with them, ex. pausing 30 seconds between everything word you say? No, that would be unsuspensful.
