| Hey Jarod - Well for starters, have a safe trip and enjoy yourself - you're going to Vegas! As far as any tips about playing in a live cardroom for the first time - try to find a room that's friendly and where you'll most likely feel comfortable playing at. The Mirage and Bellagio have really nice poker rooms but they might be a bit too intimidating to play in for a first time visit ; but do check them out if you have the time to. Some of the Vegas residents that post here recommend Mandalay Bay and Excalibur for a more relaxed atmosphere with softer games. If you'll be in the downtown area, check out The Horseshoe as well. A few pointers would be : Always act in turn - if you intend on folding, when it's your turn to act, just say "check" and if someone bets after you, then when it's your turn to act again, you can fold then. If you want to raise, say "raise" and then put your chips in. (It will be easier on you and will cause you less troubles if you do it that way, for now, because if you intend on raising and you accidentally don't come out with the full amount, you can't go back to your stack and get the amount that was needed for the raise. That's a string raise and they won't allow it - so just say raise so there's no discrepency as to what your intentions are). Buy-in for an amount that you feel comfortable with and if you start to notice that you're running low on chips, (if you plan on staying in the game) pull out a little extra money so you'll have yourself covered for the next hand that gets dealt out. (you don't want to be all-in or short on chips when that big hand comes your way). Always protect your cards that are in front of you - either with your hand or a little object. It will prevent the dealer from accidentally taking your cards and putting them in the muck because he/she thought you were folding. Tipping: That's your option but if you're going to play smaller limits, then the average tip is .50 to $1 depending on the size of the pot. There are more pointers/advice, but that's all I can think of for now. Again, have a great time.....knock 'em dead!! 4P- | ||

| Try to relax and have fun. There are a few cardrooms that offer "free" poker lessons. Even if you don't need these lessons, they are more relaxed, everyone is "new" to casino poker, and you will feel comfortable. If you are an early riser, I know that Excalibur has a morning lesson (around 10am ??). If you rise later, Luxor has an afternoon lesson (2pm). Call around and find out when the cardroom of your choice is giving lessons. You will be given non-redeemable chips for your lesson. You will be told how to act, when to act, etc. You will feel very comfortable by the time you get into a "real" game. After the lessons, most of these cardrooms offer a very low limit game (at Excalibur it is 1-3 spread limit. At Luxor it is 1/2 structured). The rake will kill you, but at least you will feel very good about the stakes and the other players. Watch out for one dealer at Excalibur. His name is DUC. Look for him and try not to let him deal to you, no matter what. He loves to take the cards from newbies (and seasoned players alike, come to think of it). If you do not have your cards protected, he WILL sweep them into the muck. If you have a chip protecting your cards, he will sweep both your chip and cards into the muck, then swear you "said" fold. It seems that no matter how many times players turn him in, there is no discipline, nothing is ever done. Most players I know simply get up when Duc comes to the table. One time I had a full house and said, "Raise." He took my cards, took my protective chip, swept the whole enchilada into the muck, then swore to me, the floorman, and the whole table that I said, "Fold." This was the 3rd time he had done this. At no time were the tapes ran back, as there is no audio. At every instance, his word was taken as gospel, although several people at the table testified to my actions. I not only lost the pot, but an additional one dollar chip, lol. Needless to say, I stopped playing at the Excalibur, although I LOVE most of the dealers (see Donna and Bubbles), and the family-friendly atmosphere there. The rake was a killer, the stakes got too small for my play, and Duc was always tolerated. One dealer told me that Duc has this quirky habit of ignoring players' instructions out of pure meaness. Who knows. Just don't let him deal to you! Most importantly, have FUN! Relax and have a good time. Felicia :) My Poker Journal: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FeliciaLee | ||
