Calling a raise with a drawing hand, iceman5, 2. Dec 2003 17:56

Lets say I have JTs. Im in LP and 3 limp in front of me. I would limp also. But now lets say I have the same JTs. The UTG raises and 2 people in front of me call the raise. Is it still correct to call the raise since its a multiway pot (although a larger one)? I dont call a raise in this situation but it seems when I raise, if someone calls then more and more people will call, so I was wondering if Im missing a play here.

It's borderline either way. If you think that either of the blinds is very likely to come in, or there's 3 callers instead of 2, you could play. If people tend to release their hands easily if they don't hit the flop, or don't pay you off as much when you make a big hand, then let it go. Fact of the matter is I'd rather have a JTs than a KJs against an early raiser, since that early raiser is fairly unlikely to hold a jack or a ten unless he has TT or JJ. If he has a big pair, you're screwed either way, but if you do hit top pair, you can feel more confident about it being best rather than hitting a king with a KJ.

THERE ARE SEVERAL ISSUES HERE, WHICH NEED TO BE

EXAMINED, TO ANSWER THE QUESTION.

FOR THE SPECIFIC EXAMPLE: YES, YOU SHOULD BE CALLING,

(AND OCCASIONALLY THREE-BETTING) WITH YOUR JACK TEN

SUITED, IN LATE POSITION, WITH THREE ALREADY IN.

ONE OR BOTH BLINDS, WILL NOW BE ATTRACTED TO THE

SIZE OF THE POT, AND WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY CALL, AS

MIGHT THE BUTTON AND SECOND BUTTON (THAT'S

"CUTOFF" FOR THOSE OF YOU USING THAT DISCUSTING TERM)

THIS IS THE IDEAL STOMPING GROUNDS, FOR A VERY GOOD

DRAWING HAND, LIKE JACK TEN SUITED.

BUT, IT'S IMPORTANT, NOT TO START COMPRIMISING THE

QUALITY OF THE SUITED CONNECTOR, AND THE NUMBER

OF KNOWN CALLERS.

IT'S VERY EASY, TO START THINKING "WELL, IF THREE PLAYERS

ARE OK, TWO WOULD BE KIND OF OK" OR "WELL IF

JACK TEN SUITED IS OK, THAN A JACK NINE SUITED IS

KINDA OK"

HAVE YOUR STANDARDS, AND STICK WITH THEM.

ALSO, YOU WANT TO CONSIDER WITH WHAT HANDS, THE

ORIGINAL RAISER, RAISES WITH. IF SHE(HE) IS AN

OPOR (THAT'S ADAMESE FOR: OVER PAIR ONLY RAISER,

THE NAME IS SELF EXPLAINITORY) THEN YOU MUST BE

PREPARED TO NOT PAY OFF, IF THE FLOP COMES SOMETHING

LIKE: J 3 6, WITH NONE OF YOUR SUIT.

IF THEY ARE A LOSER RAISER, AND WILL RAISE WITH AJ,

AND KJsuited, THEN YOU ARE IN EVEN BIGGER TROUBLE.

THE GOOD NEWS IS, YOU HAVE POSITION ON THEM, AND

WILL HAVE A GOOD INDICATION WHEN YOUR PAIR (SHOULD

YOU MAKE ONE) IS GOOD, AND WHEN IT'S NOT.

HARDLY ANYONE, IS FOOLISH ENOUGH, TO BET OUT INTO

A LARGE FIELD, WITH AN UNIMPROVED ACE KING, WHEN

THE FLOP COMES JACK HIGH.

NOW OF COURSE, THE PRIMARY STRENGTH OF JACK TEN

SUITED, IS TO MAKE STRAIGHTS, THEN FLUSHES, NOT

PAIRING UP. BUT, WITH CARDS AS "HIGH" AS JACK TEN,

THERE IS A REASONABLY STRONG SECONDARY

CHARACTERISIC, OF WINNING BY PAIRING, NOT STRAIGHTENING.

ADAM THE EXPERT USES A TEACHING METHOD THAT

USES THE FOLLOWING TERMS TO DESCRIBE WHAT

YOU SHOULD DO,

BE VERY INCLINED TO

BE INCLINED TO

BE INCLINED NOT TO

BE VERY INCLINED NOT TO

THERE ARE VERY, VERY FEW ABSOLUTES IN POKER, SO

THOSE ARE THE TERMS I USE, WHEN TEACHING.

SO, IF YOU KNOW THAT THE PERSON RAISING, WILL ONLY

RAISE WITH A VERY LARGE PAIR AA KK QQ JJ, YOU WOULD

BE INCLINED NOT TO CALL, WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE

MORE PLAYER ALREADY IN.

IF NOT, YOU WOULD BE VERY INCLINED, TO CALL.

OOPS, ONE MORE CONSIDERATION: IF YOU ARE PLAYING

IN A GAME, WITH A BET AND FOUR RAISES, YOU HAVE

TO BE MORE CAREFUL GETTING INVOLVED WITH DRAWING

HANDS, AS THE PUNISHMENT FOR MISSING, IS MORE SEVERE.

BUT, THAT DOES NOT ENCOMPASS VERY MANY GAMES,

SO, THE PREVIOUS ADVICE, IS CORRECT MOST OF THE TIME.

ICEMAN, REMEMBER, THERE ARE BLINDS IN THIS GAME,

SO, YOU GOTTA PLAY SOMETHING.

JUST KEEPS IT TO GROUP FOUR (WITH AN OCCASIONAL

GROUP FIVE) AND YOU'LL DO OK
