My first Poker game in Laughlin, danimales, 2. Dec 2003 12:27 | ||

| After reading a lot of Felicia's posts about the poker rooms in Laughlin, I took her advice and went to the "cream of the crop in Laughlin" at the Colorado Belle. I would like to thank her for being patient with all my questions and helping me find a place I could play. Being a novice, I went here because as reported the 2/5 hold 'em tables are typically loose passive. To my surprise, I only had to wait about 5 minutes to get a seat even on Thanksgiving weekend. As far as it being "the cream of the crop in Laughlin," I would hate to see the other poker rooms. Don't get me wrong, it was a good room, and I enjoyed myself, but if this is the best Laughlin has to offer... yikes. The room was clean, great felt on the tables, most dealers and staff were friendly (except the one dealer who thought a blink of the eyes meant 'check'), but it just looked like the whole room could use some updating. I also felt a little cramped; they may have tried to cram one too many tables in there. Plus, the drink service was awful on my first session. I was there for two hours, and asked for a coke twice, and never got one. Otherwise, the smoke factor was minimal at worst, as a non-smoker I can sure appreciate that! The bathrooms are just outside of the room were very clean for when nature calls. Anyway, I sit at a table, ready to have some fun and make some money. The first cards dealt to me was 10 3 offsuit, so I pitched them. Guess what the flop was? 3-3-3. Oh well! Unfortunately, there was a maniac to my right, and another maniac across the table, and a loose/aggressive/borderline maniac two seats to my left. Hardly the loose/passive I hoped for. These idiots would play anything. I saw a couple showdowns where after betting and raising to the river, a Queen high hand would beat Jack high. I even saw I guy call a capped pot on the river, only to turn over J-2 offsuit with no match. To make matters worse, I got dealt trash for at least the first 45 minutes, until I hit a straight on the turn, and took down a maniac betting out his pair of nines, seven kicker. After missing a couple flops and a couple blind bets, this put me up about 5 bucks before they moved everyone to different tables. Table two. THIS is the loose/passive table I had hoped for, and I was getting dealt some nice cards. I won my first two hands (small pots), and was immediately drawing the eyes of the players. They must of thought I was some young poker prodigy, ready to go pro. Yeah, right! It wasn't too much longer after this I got dealt 77 in the BB. Everyone folded except a MP and the button. Flop shows 7-7-A. To make a long story short, I was able to check raise the button-- twice, and take down a nice pot with my four of a kind! At this point the button (whom I was head to head with) had some choice words at this point. they lady to my left, whom I perceived as a tight/agressive; smart player; leans over and says, 'what did he expect? he let you check raise him twice, on the turn and on the river!' Anyway, I walked away up $50 bucks in about an hour. The next morning, I entered the Pinneapple tourney in which I placed third for a nice $80 prize. Not bad for a $12 entry, and taking 2 bad beats during the tourney. Afterwards, I realized I never had a hand better than 3 of a kind. I believe I played very smart, studied the players the best I could, and picked up a tell. But to make it that far in a pinneapple tourney with nothing better than a set is pretty good in my opinion. Either my poker skills are developing rapidly, or I was extremely lucky. Probably some of both. It also helped that most players in the tourney were not very good! Anyway, I had a great time at the 'Belle and can't wait to go back to play some more poker; and see my cousin. Hopefully I'll never have to play against Felicia ;-) | ||

| LOL, great post, glad you had a fun time! The Belle is getting a big update. Three of the tiny stud tables are being replaced with the nine-handed HE tables. Believe me, the Belle is most definitely the best Laughlin has to offer, so your thoughts on the other poker rooms are correct, lol. Yes, the smoke isn't as bad as in some other poker rooms. I have a feeling that smoking is coming to an end, even at the Belle. The "maniacs" typically come from southern California. There, it is not maniacal, it is just the normal way of playing. :) What separates "normal" Californians from "maniacal" Californians is how they play after the flop (true maniacs play just as badly after the flop as before). It sounds like you had a couple of real maniacs at your first table, lol. Congrats on the Pineapple win! I'm so glad for you!!! Don't worry about playing against ME. I'm not that good, I'm just much better than most of 'them,' and now you know what I mean, haha! Felicia :) <<on 2.
