The Biggest Pot I've Ever Won, Bart Mann, 2. Dec 2003 09:29

I’ve posted a lot of bad beats in here, so I think I’ve earned the right to post one that actually went my way. This is the biggest “relative” B&M pot I’ve ever won in Limit Holdem—“relative” meaning the pot size compared to the blind structure.

The game is $3/$6 Holdem at the local B&M (the only way to play). 10-way action, I get dealt AA in early position. The player UTG immediately makes it $6 to go—a perfect scenario for me. I can simply make it $9 with my aces, watch everyone else fold, and play heads-up against the initial raiser. So I push $9 out thinking I know what’s going to happen next. But to my surprise, the next THREE players call the $9 cold. In addition, both blinds and the initial raiser call the bet. So we’ve got 7-way action in a reraised pot preflop! Ugh. I just went from favorite to underdog in one fell swoop. At this point there is $63 in the pot. Flop comes:

Q-10-10

Now I’m screwed. With 7 players calling a reraised pot preflop, the chances of QQ, Q10 or any hand with a 10 in it are pretty good. If the pot is raised in this round, I’ve decided that I’m dropping out. SB checks, BB checks, and the initial raiser checks to me. A good sign. I bet $3. This eliminates two of the cold callers to my left, but there are still 5 players who call the bet. But no raises . . . $78 in the pot at this point, and the Turn comes:

Q-10-10-6

A rag. Action checks to me, and I bet $6. Two players drop out, but two call the bet. Again, no raises. Either I’m still the leader, or someone is trapping me big time. $96 in the pot, and the river comes:

Q-10-10-6-2

Another rag. Action checks to me, I bet $6. Player in LP raises to $12. Uh oh. EP calls the bet, and the action is to me. At this point there is $114 in the pot. My $6 and a call from another player would make it $132. Hard to walk away at this point. I call the $6, EP also calls, and the cards come over. The EP initial raiser shows JJ. River raiser shows AQ. Unbelievable—my pocket aces held up against seven callers, and I’m raking a monster pot—and stacking chips for the next 5 minutes. This hand ended up leading to a huge card rush, and two hours later I walked away from the table with two and a half racks of chips. Not bad for three hours of work.

I’ve been on an extremely bad streak lately, but it only takes one hand like this to change your perspective. I finally feel confident again, like I actually know what I’m doing. Imagine that. Funny how that piece of your psyche completely goes away when you’re losing. Anyway, enjoy the story--and keep in mind it won't stay bad forever.

Nice hand, nice when those aces hold up like that in a multiway pot. Two of the biggest pots big bet wise that I have ever won occurred on a single round at the Horseshoe about 8 or 9 years ago in a 48 holdem game. I was in the SB and was dealt AA, a player had straddled and had 66. The betting is capped preflop and 8 people see the flop of AA6. I don't have any idea what the other players had but that didn't deter many of them from seeing the turn for another capped round. The turn knocked 2 or 3 of them out when it was capped again and the river saw three of us putting 2 or 3 bets in. The very next small blind I am dealt QQ and the same guy had straddled (I forget what he had this time) but action was very similar to previous hand when the flop came down QQx. All told those 2 pots had about 800.00 in them. A pretty nice day to say the least:)

Good for you, Bart!

I just posted about having lost a hand in which I flopped a nut flush. Some rube sat through capped raising from pre-flop forward. He wound up filling up is 4-8 off suit hole cards! So a good story about the guy who's supposed to win actually winning is good to hear!

And what is "B&M"?

Bill-

"B&M" means "Brick and Mortar," or live play, as opposed to online cardrooms.

Well, thank you, Moz. (Now, of course, it's obvious!)
